Queen Mathilde Celebrates Belgium At Expo 2015

Throughout its six month duration, Expo 2015 in Milan will spend one special day highlighting each of the 145 participating nations. Today was Belgium’s turn and Queen Mathilde travelled to Italy to tour her nation’s pavillion and join in celebrating all things Belgian. For this visit, Mathilde topped an elegant pleated dove grey dress and coat with a new rounded pillbox in the same shade. The straw hat followed the sleek, clean lines of the coat and dress and was trimmed simply with a knotted twist at the back from which two ribbon tails wrapped up the side of the hat. While the ensemble is very elegant, I think a pop of colour from a shoe, bag or jewel (something larger than the odd insect pin) would bring it to life. I’m afraid it’s a little boring and one-note as is.

Queen Elizabeth’s Birthday Hats

A Retrospective  Tomorrow, the British Royal Family will celebrate Trooping the Colour, a parade held on Horse Guards Parade in London in June each year to officially celebrate the Queen’s birthday. Similar to national day celebrations we see in other countries, there is much pomp and circumstance that surrounds the event, which is capped off with a balcony appearance by the entire family. Here are all the hats Queen Elizabeth has worn to this event over the past 15 years:

Princess Anne Hosts `Not Forgotten` Garden Party

Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, hosted the “Not Forgotten Association Garden Party” for injured former servicemen and women at Buckingham Palace today. For this event, she wore a cream and navy straw hat. Two toned hats can be tough to pull off but this piece, with a navy crown and cream brim edged in navy piping, is well balanced. Princess Anne`s hats tend to have smallish brims and restrained trimmings- the larger scale of this piece looks great on her and the mix of feathers and straw bow loops brings the hat to life. This hat will not our annual list of favourites but it`s a lovely hat on Anne (and certainly, a vast improvement on the first hat she wore for several decades with this coat).

What do you think of Princess Anne`s two toned garden party hat?

Queen Presents New Colours to Royal Welsh Guard

Queen Elizabeth was at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff today to present new colours to the Royal Welsh Guard. For this ceremony, she repeated her sky blue felt hat trimmed with chrysanthemum blooms fashioned from feathers. While I have previously said all I want to say about this hat, today’s outing again proves how well the Queen and her dressers take each of her engagements individually into account when it comes to choosing her outfit and hat. On an ordinary day, this shade of blue might not stand out in a crowd. On a day with theatrical lighting, an arrival in the back of a convertible SUV and a massive group photo with officers in loden green and red uniforms, this was exactly the right colour.

Designer: Angela Kelly. The hat (including handmade feather flowers) was made by Stella McLaren. Coat designed by Stewart Parvin
