Your Winners! Best New Royal Hats of 2015

2015 best hat small

After nine polls, ten finalists and more than twenty thousand votes, your favourite new royal hats of 2015 have been named. With no further fanfare, here are the top five winners (jump back to this post for a peek at all the finalists):

#5 Queen Mathilde’s red straw saucer by Fabienne Delvigne worn on June 25 in China

Queen Mathilde, June 25, 2015 in Fabienne Delvigne | Royal Hats

#4     Princess Madeleine of Sweden’s magenta silk flower and ribbon twist headpiece by Philip Treacy worn for the christening of Prince Nicolas on October 11

Princess Madeleine, October 11, 2015 in Philip Treacy | Royal Hats

#3 The Countess of Wessex’s soaring cream straw slice hat with lattice woven ribbon detail by Jane Taylor, worn for Ascot on June 16

And by an incredibly slim winning margin of just twelve votes, your#1  favourite new royal hat of 2015 was Beatrice Borromeo’s natural straw hat with textured mushroom brim of unknown design worn at the christening of Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques on May 10

It appears, dearest readers, that we have not completely joined in the current trend for cocktail hats but usually favour larger scale, dramatic hats with substantial brims. Thanks to everyone who cast a vote- you can review the detailed results of the poll below. And finally, if anyone can provide any design information about our winning hat, it would be greatly appreciated!

For those of you wondering about the best repeated hat of 2015, I think it’s safe to say that this Jane Taylor design on the Countess of Wessex (which won our Ascot 2015 poll) would likely win. It received far greater positive response than any other hat we saw last year.

  1. Thank you for your hard work and a job well done in setting up these polls. It was a lot of fun looking back on when the hats were worn and voting. Beatrice Borromeo’s hat was my first choice, but I think there were some close contenders. Overall, I think 2015 was a great year for Royal hats. Let us hope 2016 is even better!

  2. Thank you very much for creating this website!! I live in the States where wearing hats is a lost art. But, I happen to absolutely love them and am so excited when I receive your emails and partake in your polls!

As for this one, there were such stunning hats to choose from. Over the years, my absolute favorite hats are worn by two women. Sophie, The Countess of Wessex is so elegant, daring and a bit edgy. There’s no question she knows exactly what works for her.

My other favorite is Queen Maxima. Incredibly chic and loves dramatic hats! You can tell she loves wearing hats and I think she’s the most comfortable and fun in her choices.

    Again, thank you Hat Queen!!

  3. I agree 100% with Jake. Maxima is my favorite but I’m happy to see La Borromeo bringing great hat juju to Monaco. Also second his idea of the men’s hat sweepstakes. I know it’s more work for you, dear Hat Queen, but we appreciate all your efforts! 20,000 votes, that’s astounding! Thank you for bringing us all the beautiful royal millinery.

  4. I love Beatrice Borromeo’s hat. So stylish and a well deserved champion! I can’t wait to see what hats she wears in 2016!

  5. A little sad to see Máxima in second place (granted I’m so biased haha), but glad to see new royal hatter Beatrice be recognized for making a great debut last year by winning first place! Hopefully she will continue to show the Monegasque royals how it’s done. Brava!

As a side note, while I know the royal men don’t often show up in hats (or a variety of styles at least), perhaps sometime we could feature them in some sort of a “best of” poll? Just a thought.

    • Good idea, Jake. How about for 2016 we name winners in 3 categories:
      1. Best new hat on a royal lady
      2. Best repeated hat on a royal lady
      3. Best hat on a royal man

I’m planning to do monthly polls to decide on the first two categories (with multiple polls in June, the busiest month of the year!) so stay tuned later this month for the first two.

  6. Wow! What a lot of work that must have entailed for you, HatQueen… tank you so much. Not all my favourites made the cut but Beatrice Borromeo’s glorious hat was my first choice. Is there a possibility of your posting the photos of numbers 6-10 to refresh our memories? Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in to give us happy hat days!

    • You’re most welcome, Barbara. And thanks for the suggestion- I added a link back to the original poll at the top of the post so you can peek back at all the finalists.
