The Norwegian Royal Family braved rainy weather yesterday to officially welcome Polish President Andrzej Duda and Mrs. Agata Grain Hauser Duda on a two-day state visit.
Queen Sonja channelled spring in her aqua suit and asymmetrical hat. This repeated piece is not only a great colour on her but such an interesting shape with a cap-like crown around which is wrapped a short, diagonally placed brim. The small scale of the design keeps the unusual shape in balance and the result is a unique piece that reads more creative than costume- a good thing for any royal hat. Princess Astrid topped her royal blue suit with her cream bumper hat with net veil and feather poof trim at the back. Paired with her pearl jewellery and cream shoes, her ensemble looked very well put together.
The most interesting hat of the day for me was a new piece worn by Crown Princess Mette-Marit. The beret hat, with slim black and cream stripes and worn at the back of her head like an oversize calot, provided much visual punch while staying within the small scale that Mette-Marit prefers these days. I thought that the contrast of this piece with her blond hair worked really well and the streamlined aesthetic of the design was a great fit for her similar personal style.

Royal Hats 
I’m reserving judgement on Mette-Marit’s hat since it’s unclear whether it’s a calot, as our HatQueen suggests, or a knit beret. @Barbara, I thought that tail was a hair ribbon at the end of s ponytail, not part of the hat. But this is a great hat day for all the Norwegians, and Mrs. Duda looks elegant.
I am a bit puzzled by the crown princess’s hat – I suspect it is a knit beret of some kind and there is a tell-tale bow or trail of wool at the back of her neck which seems to confirm it is not a conventional HAT.
I think Mrs. Duda looks very chic and I love Queen Sonja in aqua.

My favorite hat of this group has to go to Sonja; a great color and unusual shape that she pulls off very well, not to mention the pairing of those boots with this ensemble! First Lady Agata’s hat, while perhaps not the most exciting in just black and white, is very chic and is wonderful, especially since we rarely see non-royals in hats in these capacities (although Agata has worn some good ones in the past). Astrid’s hat looks great on her as always, but as we don’t see her too often, and most of the time she’s worn this hat, I’m now a bit bored with it unfortunately. Lastly, while Mette-Marit looks fine in the hat, it looks like a knit beret to me, and therefore it’s much too casual for this occasion.
I love Mette-Marit’s hat. It’s so modern and wearable. I want it!
I think the wet weather proved a challenge for footwear and hats. It must be disappointing to select a complete ensemble and then have to wear protective footwear and carry an umbrella with your carefully chosen suit and hat. So I think The Queen and Crown Princess made the best of it. I like everyone’s hat. Spring can be a difficult time to chose clothing in advance, at least in my part of the world.
Mette-Marit wore ‘wellies’ during the official ceremony outside the palace. Sensible girl! She changed into normal flats inside the palace!
Crown Princess Mette-Marit looked especially lovely; her hat suited her perfectly and set off her blond hair.
What I saw overall was a mix in seasons, white hat and shoes to black boots, might not be winter boots of course…that set the group picture imo a bit off.
The hats individually fine. Good to see Mette Marit wearing a hat.
The Queen looks Lovely in that colour and it is a real hat not a decoration type of thing. Hope more wear what I call real hats by all royal houses.
Queen Sonja and Crown Princess Mette-Marit took part in the welcome ceremony outside (it was raining very heavily, as you can see from these photos) while Princess Astrid just took part in the indoor events. As others have mentioned, it was so wet outside that Princess Mette-Marit sensibly wore her Wellies!
