Christening of Prince Oscar: Royal Guests

Today’s christening of Prince Oscar at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm’s Royal Palace was more of a family affair than a state occasion (as happens with many second royal children) and as such, there was a small contingent of royal guests. Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, who was chosen as one of Prince Oscar’s godmothers, wore a sparkling headband. While I could go on again about how much I wish Mette-Marit would actually wear a hat, I’m instead going to move on to the other Scandinavian crown princess’ hat because it’s actually worthy of discussion.

Designer: Miu Miu. It is the “Embellished Pearl Headband”
Previously Worn: I believe this is new

While the Norwegian crown princess’ headpiece was disappointing, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark wowed in a new picture hat. In black finely woven straw, the design featured a sidesweep upfolded brim that is balanced by a gentle pleated wave ruffle on the brim’s other side. Tying beautifully with Mary’s border print dress, the hat is embellished with a cream spray of leaves studded with several types of feathers. The gentle movement of this design makes it a winner for me and I thought its pairing with this dress made for a spectacular ensemble.

I’m curious, dear readers- do you love Princess Mary’s new picture hat as much as I do?!

  1. Mary looked fabulous! What a stunning picture hat. It’s absolutely perfect: the size, the brim, that wave, the embellishments… And then the combination with the dress. I think this must be one of my fave looks of her ever.

  2. For another non-hat outing, I think Mette-Marit looks quite stunning here in a very demure way. The pale mint green of her outfit is great for her, and her hair is amazing!

Mary’s hat was my absolute favorite of the day! It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Mary in something this large, and it is truly a winner. Although on my screens, this hat appears black, along with her dress docration.

    Brava ladies!

  3. Is it possible that Crown Princess Mette- Marit’s headband is actually a diamond collet necklace from the Norwegian Royal jewel vault? If so that is a very valuable sparkly headband as well as a creative use of jewellery.

      • I think it is an actual diamond collet. It makes no sense to wear cheap sparkles when you have the real deal in your jewellery box and you are wearing drop dead earrings and a positively magical aquamarine and diamond brooch.

        • It’s not all diamonds- it’s half pearls (or faux pearls). The royal jewel experts don’t know of a real piece like this in the royal collection and since Mette-Marit has mixed real and faux before, I’m not convinced it’s real. If only royal houses released this type of information!

          • Long-time lurker, first-time poster. The headband CP M-M is wearing is a Miu Miu faux pearl and rhinestone one from a couple of years ago. I quite like it, but then I usually like M-M in her headband-not-hat strategy. I like how she keeps doing her thing, I suppose.

          • Welcome, Lina! Thanks for the ID. I agree- I’ve come around to Princess Mette-Marit’s embellished headbands. They work for her.

  4. As an Australian, I am so proud of Mary – she hasn’t put a foot wrong since marrying into the Danish Royal Family – she really was born for this! Just learning the Danish language is a huge feat for someone from the other side of the world. Now, this outfit looks fabulous – LOVE it………….she is one of the few people who can wear a big hat well. The others all looked good, too, but for me, Mary’s outfit is just perfect!

  5. As an Australian I am extremely proud if ‘our Mary’, she has become one exceptionally stylish royal. I also admire how thrifty and creative she is using a trim from a hat first worn in 2007. This new hat reminds me very much of the hat worn by Queen Mathilde at Belgium National Day 2015, which was also very well received. Hat Queen do you think it is possible both hats are by the same designer?
Sorry I don’t have the technical skills to post a link to Queen Mathilde’s hat.

    • The hats are similar (see below) but no- they are not the same designer. Mary’s hat today was made by Danish milliner Susanne Juul while Queen Mathilde’s hat was made by Belgian milliner Fabienne Delvigne. Mary has a twin to this hat that we’ll take a closer look at soon!

      • Thanks HatQueen for posting the photo of Queen Mathilde’s hat and answering my question. Your knowledge of royal hats is truly remarkable and I agree your ability to recognise the trim from Mary’s hat as being worn nearly 10 years ago is amazing!!

    • Everyone goes on and on about how Kate’s style is so great but Princess Mary is the one to beat. She’s the top. She had the best hat and dress today by far but she didn’t outshine Princess Victoria. That’s a sign of true style.

HQ how in the heck did you recognize those feathers on her hat from way back in 2007?? That’s almost 10 years ago. Wowza.

  6. Agree wholeheartedly with comments praising Crown Princess Mary’s ensemble. One of the best looks of the year, for anyone.

  7. This may be the best Mary has ever looked. Stunning! As I watched Mette Marit appear, my first thought was that Hat Queen was not going to be happy!

    • As far as headbands go, it is cute. And, if rumours are true that Mette-Marit is not wearing hats because of health issues (persistent neck and back issues) then I’ll be the first to offer my support. It’s just that we see her in hats for some events and then others… nothin’. I don’t get it.

  8. I think Crown Princess Mary’s hat (and entire outfit) is absolutely perfect; she looks entirely lovely. Mette-Marit’s beautiful face will have to satisfy us by itself; from all that appears, she is just not very interested in perfection of appearance–especially not regarding headgear!!

  9. Princess Mary’s hat is gorgeous. Does she have a lot of hats where the feather bits are interchangeable?

  10. Crown Princess Mary looked PERFECT. Absolutely positively perfect. Amazing dress and hat. The best ensemble of the day.

  11. Love Marys hat – its a real hat. I liked the Queens’s hat – plain from the front but with alovely swirl at the back. Not impressed by any of the fascinators.

    • I agree entirely. Mary looks stunning! And Queen Silvia’s hat is the first of those wrap around thins that I actually like.

      • oops — not thins but things. Someone posted a saying on Facebook “I always proofread after I press send”! Me too.
