I would love to see a hat like this worn again for a fun retro look like Serena did not long ago. I am not sure how it would look on her Majesty though, she doesn’t seem the sort to wear the retro look. One of younger royal ladies would make it look great I am sure.
MrFitzroy dearly wishes there were a way to modernize these “floral helmets” and make them feel current again. HM wardrobe is still very similar now to a lot of the coat and dress designs she wore with this type of hat back in the day.

This style of hat, in all it’s over the top glory, whether worn by The Queen, Queen Mother, or Princess Margaret is MrFitzroy’s guiltiest of guilty pleasures. Much more chic than the “structured scarves” and turban-ettes that HM wore in the late 60s and 70s
And, for heaven sake, Ms. Kelly is such a fan of “More Is More” in the hat trimming department, updating this style for contemporary wear would be a dream project for her…one would think.
This photo is one of my all-time favorite outfits on the Queen. 😃
the hat shows a feeling of happiness and not structured stiffness like many of the hats the Queen and others wear today…thinking about Zara for one.
Not that I think these hats are my favourite but they are more down to earth. Have not explained that well.
I like the neckline of the coat.
While I am not a huge fan, I am not quite sure why people dislike these hats so especially considering some of the hats people ooh and aah over now that are quite hideous and in a few decades or so people will be saying, what in the heck were they thinking. I am with LGB. I would like to see them bring this style back and see if modern day milliners can improve on it. There are many ways to re-interpret this style that could be really striking.
The turban style hats have never been a favorite of mine. So hard to wear! Like a floral ski cap or toque.
I remember thinking back then, these floral hats she & Margaret wore were sooo dated looking!
Not my favorite period for Her Majesty’s hats.
I absolutely adore this style of hat. I can’t wait for the wheel of fashion to turn, so that we can see these again IRL.
It was fine in its time. Better than some of the way out there hats they wear today. The hat here looks like a hat.
Very pretty and fancy shower cap! (I do not like most of these hats from the past.)
My thoughts exactly–an elaborate shower cap.
