to 45 years ago this weekend and some wonderful green hats worn by Queen Elizabeth and Princess Anne during a tour of Turkey.

Another shot of Princess Anne’s green hat, sans tassel. The hat appears to be made of leather.

I think Anne could pull off both outfits today–and she probably still has them!

They were at the opening of Gallipoli memorials, very important and quite a delicate subject even now.
I agree that the Queen looks rather like a leprechaun in the first pictures. What also jumps out is that it appears the Queen is wearing blue gloves rather than her traditional black or white.
My initial reaction was that the three hats (except for Princess Anne’s chartreuse cap) all look similar, serviceable but not overly creative.
After seeing the closeup refereed to by LBG, though, I rather like that one, which I guess is white and brown rather than white and black. As the current displays of the Queen’s hats have shown, when viewed up close, many (probably most) of these hats are much more intricate and more interesting than they first appear.
Love the second outfits worn by both the Queen and Princess Anne. There was a comment on identical white shoes. My thought was that the white hats looked similar, just different coloured bands.
Identical white shoes… think they share?
Princess Anne wore the fashions of the sixties and seventies with panache, proving a real head-turner when she used her height to showcase oversized hats like the trendy lime-green Carnaby street cap (second pic set). Her hat in the first pic set is fine, but tame in scale compared to what she was capable of carrying off in that era.
HM’s green and blue ensemble contains interesting design ideas that don’t quite come off. I wish the hat with the buckle didn’t say “leprechaun” to me.
HM’s black-and-white outfit (pic set 2) looks surprisingly modern. We don’t see HM in these non-colours very much, but it’s a refreshing look. That interesting white hat appears to have a unusual helmet crest on it – I’d love to get a closer look. Thanks for that link – the Queen’s hat looks like it has a Stetson-type crown (ie, with a big dip in it) while Anne’s hat, in the Telegraph shot, clearly has a huge tassel hanging off it, which, oddly, isn’t visible in the shots above.
I can’t figure it out. In the photo of Anne looking upwards, the tassel should be swinging behind the hat. All I can think is that she removed it from the hat between the photos being taken (too different engagements on the same day?). Perhaps it looked too “Greek”, or perhaps she just got fed up with it and made a “running repair”.

It’s possible that the photograph is a mirror image of the original (this often happens with archive photos for some reason).
Thanks for this link- it shows such a great view of the hat. As others have mentioned, it is white and brown which is slightly unexpected.
Wow. We always think that the Queen is beyond fashion, but these outfits are so of their time, and totally fabulous. The colour block coat is particularly great – I could just see Margot Leadbetter in that one!
Margot Leadbetter – I love it!!
Hah! Who would have thought. I really like the Queens coats! The hats..oh well. Servicable.
