Princess Beatrix visited the Dutch Historical Maritime Museum in Amsterdam this morning to take in events for the museum’s 100th anniversary and view a new exhibition. For this, she wore a new hat in black and silver straw. With a flat crown and high, upfolded triple bumper brim, the hat follows a familiar shape we’ve seen in numerous variations on Beatrix. Black hats can easily look heavy and one dimensional but the use of metallic silver straw for the middle layer of brim adds a sparkle and lightness to this design.

It’s the second new sparkling hat we’ve seen on Beatrix within a week, making me wonder if we’ll see this design trend continue with her subsequent new hats. What do you think of this design?

These large bumper hats always remind me of a big wheel of cheese, which might just be my mind making associations with the Netherlands. But Princess Beatrix has a lot of hats in this style which are slightly smaller, which I find much more attractive. And if she stuck with the smaller size, she might not need to rely on shoulder pads to balance out her look.
Now I will forever think of these hats as the Cheese Wheels!
Like the empress has her distinct hat style so does Beatrix, the silhouette alone gives them away, love it.
Gosh, this is subtle! On my monitor the middle layer simply looks like the same black straw with a very, very slightly different tone due, I thought, to the light shining on it differently. If it really is a different colour, I’d say it isn’t different enough!
I liked the overall look of last week’s ensemble, including the hat. I think this hat is a bit too heavy-looking for the petite Princess! She looks in good health though!
I like the look…I think it is a good style for the Princess.
Not a fan of the bumper hat. She wears them so frequently, that it’s always nice to see her in something else. I didn’t care for the color either.
This is a great hat and ensemble for Beatrix, but I find it a bit funereal since it’s all black. I’ve also been missing to more colorful and extravagant hats of Beatrix’s queen days, although I realize she must take a backseat role now.
Looks good. This is a much better way to add shine than that hat with the black patent leather strip.
This is very attractive on princess Beatrix, but such a common shape on her, not quite as exciting for hat watchers.
I like it!
