In our year-end wrap up of royal hats, the ultimate winner is the hat choosen for favourite new design of the year. Twelve polls narrowed down your favourites in this category to seventeen designs from fifteen different milliners- each one, a winner in its own right. From these seventeen designs, here are your top five favourite new hats worn in 2016:
Zara Tindall in a navy felt percher beret covered in feathers by Rosie Olivia worn on March 16
Crown Princess Mary at Prince Oscar’s christening on May 27 in Susanne Juul’s black straw picture hat with waved brim
Duchess of Cambridge’s royal blue percher with leaf trim by Silvia Fletcher for Lock & Co. on Sep 24
Lady Brabourne’s grey and silver hat with upswept brim by Dillon Wallwork worn June 25

Princess Charlene on Nov 19 in Rachel Trevor Morgan’s black and white straw pyramid hat with roses
We see Princess Charlene in very few hats but there was no doubt, based on all your reactions to the hat she wore for Monaco National Day celebrations this year, that this stunning design was something very special. Congratulations to Rachel Trevor Morgan, whose work for Queen Elizabeth we have long admired, for claiming your pick for top royal hat of 2016.

I really like all of the winners! Thank you for putting together the year end results, Hat Queen! It has been fun to revisit the royal hats of 2016. I love that you have started the ‘Men’s’ division. Equal opportunity!
I really hope that the milliners read your blog and the winners are congratulating themselves right now!
Excellent choices! I adore them all, but something just stands out about Crown Princess Mary’s wide brim beauty and Zara’s organic “wing.” The latter almost looks as if it’s a biological part of her face and head. I call that being “one with the chapeau!” 😘
I think I’d have gone with Mary for the win here, but Charlene’s hat is certainly a stunner. I just wish it were bigger, it could handle another inch or two to be truly spectacular. But then we do all love a cartwheel here don’t we!
I am in love with #5! I loved it when I first saw the collection and am still in love with it!
I don’t think I voted for any of the top 5, but I think these are perfect choices! Princess Charlene for the win!
Oh dear. I was getting prepared for something spectacular as I scrolled down, each hat more beautiful than the last. But then……… It may be everyone else’s favorite, but I REALLY dislike that hat, and the way she wore it. It seemed tilted down over one eye in one photo, then pushed up in the next. The red, white and blue color scheme was too stark, as was her hair and make-up with it. Not my cup of tea.
TOTALLY called this back in November.
