to this day in 1986 when the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived in Japan for the start of a state visit. Diana’s dress and simple (but jauntily placed) hat led the news around the world that day- diplomatic dressing at its finest.

Gorgeous hat, gorgeous outfit. A fabulous statement.
Diana will forever be my favorite royal. This was simple elegance and I always thought she had a great way of complimenting her host country without overdoing it.
What was this hat made of? It looks like plastic in the pictures, it’s so smooth and shiny, although I agree it was the perfect hat for that dress. Always beautiful Diana.
Just peak Di this outfit. Absolutely stunning. I love the pic with the Japanese flag – she was a gift to the photographers.
That outfit and polka dot dress are stunning. 80s fashion at its best. Just wow.
June 14, 1986. I LOVE seeing HM in uniform! A great family shot from the balcony.

Diana had a touch of the Edwardian spirit in her hat choice and placement. And in the last photo, which one might have thought would look like a completely chaotic collision of two fashion cultures, she manages to make the whole assemblage completely charming.
Like Kate’s maple leaf-trimmed cocktail hat when in Canada, this ensemble is a great nod to the Japanese flag without being too obvious or costumey.
I remember that dress and hat especially, because I love red. The picture where she is in the kimono and is holding the collar, is a wow. Just gorgeous. She is the one that really started my love of hats.
Always thought this ensemble was stunning!
A stunning outfit, repeated for the same year’s 1986 Queen’s Birthday Parade.
Beautiful is the only word
