Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to this day in 1992 when the Princess of Wales wore this wide brimmed Philip Somerville hat on a visit to Egypt. The matching width of stripes on the hat and Catherine Walker suit are so effective (and proof of obvious collaboration between fashion designer and milliner). It’s hard to believe 25 years has passed.

  1. I wonder if there are any of Diana’s hats in Prince William or Prince Harry’s possession. It would be sweet to have Duchess Catherine wear one someday.

    • Sorry but that thought makes me cringe a bit. There are already so many comparisons between the two women- let Kate have her own, individual style. I`m also not sure how many hats from the 80s and 90s would translate well to current day. Let them be in the past.

  2. I have always thought this was one of Diana’s most beautiful and successful “Middle Eastern” outfits. The hat’s width is perfect with the longer jacket and skirt. The colors really pop too.

  3. Just a note that she is pictured visiting Heliopolis War Cemetery 130km west of Alexandria. The cemetery contains the graves of Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Battle of El Alamein, 1942. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains 23,000 such cemeteries in 154 countries.

  4. It’s quite lovely this isn’t it. Just such a glamorous look, the hat is a cloche on steroids and she wears it so well.

    • “Cloche on steroids” is a good way to put it! Do you suppose that was intentional, or is the crown just too deep? In any case, she looks lovely.

  5. The hat is fabulous because of its simplicity: huge, wide contrasting strip of fabric, but no extraneous little do-dads.

  6. Lovely hat, beautiful colors, perfect for a sunny, hot climate. Princess Diana looks covered up but cool with that wide brim and the comfortably loose clothes. I just love a long jacket over a swishy skirt. The outfit may not be the current style, but I think the hat is timeless.
