King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima arrived in Rome today for the start of a four-day state visit. As she often does or such high profile events as this, Queen Máxima used the occasion to debut a new hat. In light, nude pink, the hat follows her familiar, go-to shape with a high, upswept ‘slice’ brim, wide hatband and folded side bow. This shape has become a working uniform of sorts for Máxima, part of a formula that includes a dress, heels, a side chignon and spectacular earrings. It’s a uniform that is becoming quite familiar to us royal hat fans but gosh- it’s a uniform that looks fantastic.
Cataloging the minutiaea of Maxima’s slice hats does indeed prove that she has a rotation going! But, as we all seem to agree, she looks fabulous in them.
Maxima has outdone herself on this tour. She has looked fantastic in every outfit. I wish we all had a uniform that worked so well!
This particular slice hat looks to have a little larger brim than most of her other ones. She has so many in these neutral shades, so it’s not as exciting to see these as it once was, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t look amazing in them!
The brim looks larger — maybe a little too large — to me, too. Well put, Jake: she looks amazing even when she sticks to her “uniform.”
She is just simply fabulous.
I have slightly mixed feelings about these style hats. In the closeup pictures, it looks like a massive, sort of lumpy, tan hat. Side views are better, making the hat seem smaller because you don’t see the whole rim. But in the full length shots, you can see that the hat is in proportion to Queen Maxima’s whole figure. And in shots like the sixth above, with the sun shining through the hat, you get a good sense of it being pink and it practically glows like a halo, looking absolutely beautiful.
Sorry the hat is not new…………. worn on a visit to Zeeuws vlaanderen.

That hat does indeed look very similar. I know photography can make a great difference in the appearance of color, but the color of the “Italian” hat does look much more toward nude than the “Dutch” hat, which looks more baby pink. Curious. We will await word. (In an event, the queen looked absolutely delightful.)
If you look at the curving shape of the brim, the two hats appear to be different. The hat worn in Vlaanderen also looks to have a larger brim. I have spoken to Josine (author of the blog you cite)- she and I agree if the hat is indeed the same, it has undergone some changes. Josine has contacted Fabienne Delvigne directly and we’ll share the response we receive.
I have just read a Fabienne Delvigne’s post of four hours ago on Facebook: NEW hat. “Yesterday, Her Majesty Queen Maxima arrived in Rome for the start of a four-day state visit. She was wearing her New Agatha hat in dusty rose.”
I thought it was new! Thanks for this confirmation, Edie. I’ve got my hands full this week!
Here is a link to this confirmation, for those who are interested.
