Royal Ascot 2017 Day 2: Queen Elizabeth

Royal Ascot | Royal Hats After wearing blue to open Parliament this morning, Queen Elizabeth threw off bet makers today at Ascot by changing into a different ensemble! She debuted her second new hat of the day, this one in butter yellow straw with a tall crown and gently angled brim, trimmed with a triple pleated hatband and side spray of transparent straw bows and arrow trimmed feathers.

Designer: Rachel Trevor Morgan. Coat by Stewart Parvin
Previously Worn: this hat is new
It was announced later this morning that the Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to hospital today for a non-critical health issue. This explains his absence at this event today. I’m sure you all join me in wishing him a speedy recovery.

  1. Her Majesty looks lovely today and I truly love the hat. The color, the trimmings and the hatband all work together so well. I also like the organdy and feather arrows. Rachel Trevor Morgan does such fabulous work. She’s a true artist in millinery.

  2. Is there anything sunnier than HM wearing yellow? And proving yet again that Stewart Parvin and Rachel Trevor Morgan are a match made in heaven, when they team up together HM always looks stellar. Well wishes to the Duke!

  3. I actually guessed HM’s hat colour correctly for the first 2 days!! My guess for day 3 is pale pink or peach and for day 4 light blue or aqua – now I have put my predictions in writing they wont come true?
I would also love to see this hat worn just with the dress. Whilst the dress HM wore to the opening of Parliament would have gone very well with this hat and coat I think the reason why she changed dresses, was the won worn at Parliament was longer than the dresses she normally wears and would have stuck out below the hemline of this coat.
(Also see my comment re. hat and outfit worn to Opening of Parliament)

  4. I like most of the hat, just not that extra flap behind the bows and arrows on the left side (facing the Queen) that gives the Queen extra height and seems to compete with the crown angled up to the right. Makes it look a little like an AK split crown coming in from both sides at once.
I agree with JamesB in that this is so similar to the two other yellows in the rotation. As always, I would like to see the dress only worn with the hat. Usually colored dresses have more of their colors in the hat. The solid yellow hat might look excellent, might look out of place. It’s hard to guess. Yellow is not a predominant color in the dress (probably the 4th or 5th most common, although I’m sure the shades match exactly.)
I too assumed that both dresses today would be the same. They’re so similar!

  5. I can’t help but feeling a bit ‘meh’ about this. It’s lovely, but so, so similar to the other two yellow outfits in the current rotation that I feel something a bit different could have been done here. I think that’s why Angela Kelly overdoes it sometimes, she’s always trying to come up with something different, but that’s not always successful.

  6. Whew…sigh of relief after the morning appearance. I like the lightness of the organdy trim. Hope it gets just warm enough that we can see the hat with just the dress.

But why didn’t she go with this ensemble for Parliament? Would this be considered too festive?

  7. I’ve already said my piece (peace?) on this yellow wonder – I love it from head to hem!
    Happy SUMMER to everyone!
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I found the Queen Mother’s penultimate appearance at the Royal Ascot, 16 years ago today! Once again, enjoy the memory!

  8. HM the Queen looks radiant in this outfit! She looks lovely in this sunny shade of yellow. The hat is beautiful; it has enough drama for Ascot without being fussy. I’m enjoying the monochrome aspect of the hat too.

  9. HM can wear yellow so well, and this is an absolutely stunning hat and ensemble! The lines, angles, and trim are beautiful, and demonstrates that RTM really is one of the best milliners of our day.

Personally, I think it’s funny how people assumed she wouldn’t have time to change between Parliament and Ascot; this is HM The Queen, who has the superpowers to change outfits and hats like few others can! If she hadn’t changed, I would’ve been much more shocked. HM comes from the end of a time when people constantly changed outfits during the day to suit different activities, and this is no different.

  10. As ever RTM has produced a fab hat for HM – I don’t know why she ever uses other Milliners! And with a Stuart Parvin outfit- a winning combination!

  11. And the Prince of Wales changed as well. I’m done and going to the Chicago Cubs baseball game. See ya!

      • Have some peanuts and Cracker Jack for me, Chuck! I can’t help visualizing you in the bleachers, wearing your morning coat and top hat! Or at least a dashing Panama.

  12. See my comment on the post about the Opening, however, this now makes a bit more sense. The dress is the same as the one she wore to the Opening, only the hat and coat (and the brooch) have changed. This is a great hat! But I still would have bet purple for her hat color today – tomorrow maybe? LOL!
