‘New’ Hat From the Past #27

Royal Hats to an August 20, 1995 visit to the Tower Of London where the Queen donned an aqua straw hat with pork pie shaped crown, trimmed with a wide, ruched white silk hatband anchored with an aqua button.

Better views of this design are found on subsequent outings on June 17, 1995 (for Trooping the Colour) and June 7, 1997 (at the Epsom races) with a coordinating coat.

  1. I do like this hat but it has a look of molded plastic or hard icing to it where I wish it had a softer look to go with the lovely soft looking coat.

  2. Now with the coat I get it. It’s a really beautifully made hat, with similarities to the much loved pink swirl.

But with that dress – good God no! There’s way too much going on. It all tips into Mrs Slocombe for me alas then.

  3. While I don’t like the thick crepe fabric of the band, its heavy moulded “Sydney opera house” shaping (which appears to have suffered a ding near the button), nor the button itself (I find buttons on hats look odd next to similar size buttons on a coat) — I adore this colour and hat shape on HM. And I just have to say how much I like this floral dress, in light of the fussy ones we’ve seen recently in Hats from the Past. The hem pleats and romantic sleeve add a little softness and movement to the strict core structure of the dress, and the visible skin above the gloves is a pretty and flattering feature I would love to see repeated. But I suspect HM prefers her forearms always covered these days.

    • You really do see the Sydney Opera House in the second from bottom photo!
Love the aqua and agree w/ mcncin about the feminity of the dress.

      • Similar indeed! the outfit “formulas” used by the Queen’s wardrobe planners are very evident.
Of the two, I prefer the hat you found. It’s simpler, but with plenty of closeup detail- which is also why I prefer the suit featured in HQ’s post.
