Princess Beatrix Opens Tilburg Exhibition

While waiting for photos of Prinsjesdag to be released, I want to catch up with Princess Beatrix who on Saturday, was in Tilburg to open Exhibition WeerZien at Museum de Pont. For this event, she repeated her black straw hat with pleated brim.

This straw design looks simple and streamlined but there is a a lot going on here- the domed crown is wrapped in a tall, folded hatband of sorts that overlaps on the right side, an overlap echoed on the high, upfolded brim- a brim made of pleated straw and edged in a wide stripe of binding. The scale and balance of the hat keeps these design elements in harmony and the use of light straw gives further airiness to the hat. For a black hat without your typical feather or flower trim, it’s surprisingly interesting to look at.

  1. The vertical pleating is so unusual! I appreciate all the interest in the back view.

Here’s a thought — I know this is a signature look for Beatrix, but Max could really carry off a hat like this.

  2. A typical “cake” hat for Q/PBeatrix, but this one has lots of interest! I like the vertical pleating (which I missed in the first couple of photos).

Trixie, you’re still a lovely lady! And one I’d really love to meet!

  3. This is a lovely hat- I especially like the different directions the fabric goes on the outer brim, and it looks great with the striking blue and black suit. Great appearance from the Princess!

  4. The sheerness of the outer brim makes it possible in many of the photos to get a very good sense of the shape and style of the crown and hatband, which is not always the case with a dark-colored hat. In all, some very interesting details here!

  5. To me this is an extra special hat. I know it is a common silhouette for her but they have amped up the interest with the pleats and various wrapping.

The texture of the hat is wonderful too. It appears more often navy than black on my screen but that is a common occurrence. It does give us two looks (smile). I wasn’t as impressed with the back as the front and sides but even that is beginning to appeal to me. Lot of interesting things to look at with this hat.

This is a winner for me. I think she looks wonderful. Thank you for sharing it with us.
