Events for Imperial Royals

On Tuesday, Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako attended the opening ceremony of LAWASIA (The Law Association for Asia and Pacific) in Tokyo. Masako wore an ecru hat with trilby-esque upturned back brim, trimmed with a wide blue hatband. I suspect the design is new.

Also on Tuesday, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko commemorated the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Japan War-Bereaved Families Association. For this event, the Empress wore a larger scale white rimmed saucer hat trimmed with a silk bow in the the same buff and black printed silk as her blouse. I can’t say that I think the pairing of this particular silk with white was a great idea. As we’ve said many times here, it’s all a bit too much biscuit.

Yesterday, the Imperial couple were in Hidaka where they paid a visit to the Koma Jinja Shrine. For the event, Empress Michiko repeated her white saucer hat with transparent lattice underbrim and a curling ribbon ribbon in the slate blue accent as on her suit.

Thoughts about this trio of Imperial hats?

  1. It’s great to see Masako again, especially with her smile! While the hat isn’t that exciting, she does wear it well, and I think it looks even better with her hair down.

The Empress’ new hat is great as I enjoy seeing these larger discs on her. I do agree with others that white was probably not the best color pairing choice with this parchment yellow-beige; I think grey would’ve been a much better choice. But overall the Empress looks lovely as always.

The second hat on the Empress is again lovely, but not as interesting as the first one. I do very much enjoy seeing the Shinto priest’s outfit and hat!

  2. Dear HatQueen,

On June 27 2014, when Emperor and Empress visited to Okinawa Prefecture to commemorate the dead of World War II, the Empress has worn the same hat and suit as she wore on September 19 2017.

I suspect this particular silk is “Ryukyu-Kasuri”, a traditional textile in Okinawa. Perhaps she used Kasuri in her outfits as a sign of respect for Okinawans culture.

      • Great catch, Jessica- the hat bases are indeed, different. The bows look different to me as well- the one here looks fuller than the bow from 2014. How peculiar this is- I wonder why a different hat was made. Peculiar!

  3. Love Masako’s hat, that flip at the back of the brim is so cute on her. Most of the time I don’t care for trilby type hats, but she carries this one off for sure. The usual yawn for those flat disks except for that black and buff pattern which I love. I agree about the white being the wrong choice.

  4. All 3 Imperial hats are good. Just for variation, I’d like to see one of the Empress’ hats with the decoration somewhere else than the front. Even once. CP Masako’s hat might be old with a different hatband. Looks similar to 516297328 or 1458959 on Getty Images. Of course, IHA could have supplied multiple hats in the same style.

  5. I, too, am a fan of Crown Princess Masako’s hat! I love the slightly extended brim! Empress Michiko always look well put together, but I agree with HQ that the color on the new hat was not the best choice. I do think the size of the saucer and the bow at the front was successful.

  6. Even though the Empress is wearing these small hats with coordinating trim, I think the details of matching with her frock really pulls it together for me, biscuit and all. I agree that it’s good to see CPMasako participating in royal functions and battling her issues with grace and style. Love her hat which coordinates so well with her coat and dress. I particularly like the brooches that both royal ladies are wearing. I wonder if there is a blog that follows these jewels like From Her Majesty’s Jewel Vault follows Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Duchess of Cornwall?

  7. I love the Crown Princess’ hat! I would have really loved the look had she done a low chignon. However, I know that’s not her style.

The Empress always looks lovely and appropriate in whatever she wears.

  8. The Empress remains true to form. Like so many older ladies, she has found what she believes to be her best look, and is sticking with it! I think we are all pleased to see Masako out and about. Her hat is positively radical for the Japanese Royal Family! Two colours and a slightly jaunty back on it. Well done!
