‘New’ Hat From the Past #31

Royal Hats Kicking off a second series of more ‘New” Hats From the Past”, looking at hats worn by Queen Elizabeth during that 1980s and 1990s that are new to me (and perhaps, new to some of you as well). On September 22, 1998 while on a tour of Malaysia, the Queen wore this taupe straw lampshade hat with tall crown and cream hatband (interestingly placed on top of the brim and not around the base of the crown). Not a vibrant hat, the shape is still very distinctive and I’m surprised I don’t recall seeing it before. Is this is a new hat for you as well?

We’ll continue these ‘New” Hats From the Past”  several times per week for the next three weeks while I am on vacation. Stay tuned!

  1. The Queen has a lovely peaches and cream complexion, so when a color seems to wash away every bit of her natural color it’s quite an achievement.

  2. Love it! She probably went with a cooler color palette for a trip to Mayalsia which is very hot indeed. No coat needed for this outing. She even went with the white gloves and handbag which makes sense to me.

  3. From a color standpoint, I like the hat better with just the dress than with the coat, but the shape is indeed very interesting. Just recently, I saw her in another hat of a similar shape on Pinterest, I’ll go back and see if I can find it.

I think that at the time of these photos, she was just about at the end of the time when she looked good in this taupe shade alone, without contrast – before her hair turned as silver as it is now.

  4. I like the shape of this one. Putting the whole outfit together, I find I like the hat better with the coat over the dress than with the dress by itself. I guess that is the long way of saying I don’t particularly like the dress.

  5. HQ: Don’t work too hard while on holiday! But I AM glad that you’ll still send us occasional treats! You are top-shelf!

Here’s a very good close-up shot, 3 years later, including her coat. As always, HM looks beautiful.

    • There will be daily treats! I can’t have you all bored while I’m away!

As others have mentioned, the coat adds a level of tailored sophistication here that really works. The bit of polka dot dress peeking through is just enough.

  6. I really like the shape and color! It goes well with the dress. Does anyone else feel like this is “dressed down” for Her Majesty? It’s almost like she’s wearing jeans.

    • I don’t think the queen looks dressed down, especially in the context of the times. The color is bland, but the hat shape is flattering–though I am not sure about the placement of the hatband. It does make the hat a bit livelier. Very fetching, on the whole.

  7. I really love this hat too! My only quibble is the colour. Her Majesty looks better in saturated jewel tones. Especially with her silver hair. But I do like the shape of this hat.

  8. Love this! I remember she was starting to branch out a bit around this time and I liked it then and still do now. Such a fun shape and really flattering on her.
