to October 1981 and a young Princess of Wales on an inaugural visit to the country of which she was princess. Many of Diana’s early hats were small pieces with veils and lavish feather trim like this one- I’m not sure this beige velvet John Boyd designed calot was the most becoming colour for the blonde princess but it looks from these photos that the crowds didn’t care.

She did look lovely that day, I was there and saw her, a friend owned the Rolls, and another friend was her chauffeur that day, but it was a wet day, the feathers didn’t fair well due to that. But being Welsh we were very happy to have her visit us, whatever the weather.
Nice hats!
Very much of its time, I’d say. Anyway, Diana could get away with almost anything in the fashion stakes, couldn’t she?!

Able to briefly pop online embed today- thanks for the stellar job you’re all doing sharing hat news and keeping the conversation going! If you continue to have trouble posting long links just put them into a url converter like bitly.com and I’ll fix this when I get back to civilization.
Thank you for fixing my previous links, now that I know what the problem is I’ll try and be careful with long links.
And I’m glad everyone is enjoying my photos.
Love Princess of Wales’ calot hat. While the color was perhaps not her best, she looked polished and chic. Thank you Maja for the additional photos of the Wessex’s, Norwegian royal family and I LOVE the CPMasako’s camel hat with matching hatband (I wish I could see the back for more details).

CP Masako at the Science and Technology in Society forum in Kyoto on October 3rd:

She was so keen to do it right. I remember her getting soaked a lot when she was starting. Despite the colour being so drab I like it.
It wouldn’t be difficult to guess an approximate date for this outfit or hat, very much of their time. I agree about the colour not being the best for Diana, although I suspect it looks particularly drab due to the rain – it might have looked a bit more lively and elegant on a nice sunny day. The third photo must have been reversed, I assume, since the plume is on the other side of the hat.
I remember that outfit. The hat is attractive.
somehow the hat seems more timeless then the clothes
