Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to 1966 and a spectacular hat rimmed in osprey feathers worn by Princess Muna of Jordan during a visit to London. It’s a lot of look, this one.

Love this fabulous classic hat, which could be worn to Ascot today by any of our statement hat-loving royals, such as Sophie CoW, or Princess Beatrice. I can imagine it worn with a plain dress in a neutral such as beige, sand, or pearl or even charcoal grey – with pink accessories.
Does anyone know how the feathers are actually attached? I guess each shaft is stitched sideways onto the hat – I suppose the shafts are what we can see curling diagonally around the edges of the brim – also visible in the video at 0:3. Days of painstaking handwork involved, it would seem!

    • Philip Ian Wright in his video “How to Make a Hat” speaks about needing to glue feathers to the hat base as the shafts can’t be pierced with a needle to secure them by sewing. Certainly lots of work involved making this piece. I find it terribly mismatched with Princess Muna’s outfit. The video reveals better hat/outfit choices including more feathery ones.

  4. This hat is quite something. It bets no relation to her outfit, but I still like it.

But that outfit on QEII that Jimbo poster. OMG, I think that has now rocketed to the top of my favourite lookof hats ever. It’s amazing, she looks so chic and soooo 60s.

  5. I wonder if it was necessary for everyone else to maintain a perimeter in order to avoid static electricity malfunctions! The Queen’s hat is interesting – it precedes the beginning of my royal obsession, but I do remember seeing pictures of it previously.

    • Matthew, thank you – it’s been quite a while since I’ve laughed out loud at these comments! Yours conjured up a wild picture in my mind.

  6. Sensational! The dusty pink is very nice. Here’s another pink hat from the same Jordanian visit that also packs a wallop!
Happy weekend, everyone, and WELCOME BACK, HQ!!!!!
