Queen Elizabeth Celebrates Christian Charity

Queen Elizabeth attended a Service of Celebration at St Mary’s Church in Islington yesterday in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Christian charity, Scripture Union. For this event, she repeated her vibrant orchid purple hat with large red feathers.

While the large crown on this design is not my favourite of shapes for Her Majesty, it provides a subtle departure from her other go-to shapes. This hat, however is not about shape- it’s all about colour and on that front, it’s so, so good.

  1. I like this one. It isn’t a color combo that just anyone could pull off, but the Queen nails it. As others have said, I would love to see the dress. I think it is cute that the lining of the coat matches the feathers on her hat. Perfection is in the details!

  2. I have no problems with the crown shape, and still am very much in love with this whole ensemble; you know the bright colors especially appeal to me! My only complaint is that we still have not seen the dress underneath. Otherwise I’m very happy to see this one out again!

    • I suspect I’d like the hat more with the dress than with the coat! There looks to be a wide red stripe up the center of the dress, a bold look for certain but one that would be so sharp with this hat!

  3. I enjoy seeing this hat and outfit so much– even though the crown shape is, as you say HQ, unusual. What a welcome and cheerful sight in the festive season!

  4. Here in the southeast of the U.S. there are women’s groups call Red Hatters that get together for social events and activities of mutual interest, and they wear red & purple for all of their gatherings. When I first saw the photos of this event online, I wondered if HM was preparing to join one of those groups!

But seriously, looking back at all of the appearances of this hat over the years, while I do agree that the crown is overly large, the fact that it is not centered and thus is tilted back a little (visible in one of the older posts) does make it more flattering than it might otherwise be, and it’s clearly a favorite of hers since it appears so regularly.

Regarding the rest of the ensemble, has anyone ever found any photos of the dress or skirt underneath the coat? It appears to be vertically striped red/purple, and I’m dying to see it. It’s such a shame that the garments underneath the coats are so rarely seen!

  5. The coat and hat look magenta on my computer. They do contrast well with the red feathers and part of the dress skirt peeking through the coat.
