Norwegian Royals Attend Christmas Day Service

King Harald, Queen Sonja, Princess Märtha Louise and her daughters attended Christmas day service together at Holmenkollen Chapel in Oslo yesterday. For this event, Queen Sonja repeated a hat with brown velvet crown and fur bumper brim. The brim coordinates with the collar on Sonja’s coat, a touch which adds a bit of formality to piece.

I find this style of loosely structured crown, even when made in velvet and trimmed in fur, an informal and slightly dowdy look. Two years ago on this same day, Queen Sonja paired this same coat with a chocolate felt fedora. Which hat do you think pairs with this coat best?

  1. I like both this hat and the fedora paired with this coat. The red patterned outfit and jewels are also a good touch.

And while the Norwegians are usually not as formal as most other royals, but even Emma Behn’s casualness stands out; I don’t like to be too harsh on children, but a nicer shirt and jacket/coat would’ve made a big improvement.

  2. This hat seems intended more for warmth than style – the fedora in the older photos of this coat does seem a bit more “dressy”.

Regarding the fur itself, they are now making fake fur that looks quite a bit like the real thing, though I suspect that for someone in that age bracket, this one is probably real.

  3. I think a non-fur coat with the fur collar would have competed less with the hat.
A note on the young girls attire… totally inappropriate for such an occasion.

  4. To me this is a rather Russian look, perfect for a Nordic Queen, if you don’t mind the real fur. The people in Scandinavia must not mind it as the Swedish and Danish Queens seem to wear it often, or maybe they are given a pass as being from an older generation.

  5. It does go nicely with the collar of the coat, so that is good. A different shape for the hat – less floppy – might be an improvement.
