Princess Beatrix was in Utrecht today to take part in a symposium of the inter-religious network “In Freedom Connected”. For this event, she wore a black straw hat with asymmetrical crown and upswept brim. The hat is trimmed with a silver silk hatband printed in a lattice motif that follows the same sloped shape as the hat’s crown along with a large black straw loop at the side

Black hats can look harsh at daytime engagements but this one works, thanks to its pairing with a silver brocade tunic and skirt – against these pieces, the hat brings a welcome bit of contrast. It’s also a lovely scale on Princess Beatrix.

Any thoughts about this new hat?

Princess Beatrix looks very attractive in this hat. It’s strange that different photos (from what I assume are the same occasion) the hatband appears on my computer as silver, shell pink, and pale blue!
I like the detail on the hatband. I don’t think the silk is printed in a lattice motif, it looks more as if the silk is covered in light grey “voilette” : veiling !
Looking at this hat a second time, I think you’re right- the hatband does seem to be overlaid in pale grey net veil.
We don’t get a ton of Beatrix appearances anymore, and the vast majority of them seem to be in neutral colored cake hats, so I’m quite happy to see this hat! While this one is in black and silver, it stands out being a brimmed hat with some interesting trim details; it pairs very nicely with her silver dress and black pumps. Brava!
I like that trim follows the shape of the crown. It enhances the slope of the crown, somewhat hard to see in a black hat.
In general I am not fond of the turned up brims Princess Beatrix wears. It the brim was turned down, the trim would look even better.
This is a very nice hat for Princess Beatrix. She looks lovely.
A very elegant look indeed. Princess Beatrix is always smiling and seems genuinely happy to be attending the event in question.
