One Hat, Four Coats

Royal HatsWe tend to associate Queen Máxima with soaring, upswept brim picture hats but another royal who has embraced this style and worn it with great success is the Duchess of Cornwall. One of these designs in the Duchess’ millinery closet is a version in ecru and gold finely woven windowpane lattice straw, trimmed with flying straw twists. Camilla has paired this hat with four coats since its debut:

I’m curious, dearest readers, which pairing do you think works best?

  1. 1. Ascot Green coat — my fave. Fabulous use of contrast.
2.Westwood oufit – beautiful colour matching. too bad about the unflattering coat shape
    3. Cambridge wedding coat – one different pastel colour too many in this look – fine enough, but not as coherent as it could be. A pinkish hat to match the coat skirt would have been stunning.
    4. Garden party dress. The hat colour doesn’t relate to either section of the coat — a pinkish hat (to tone with the coat) would be my preference.
To be honest, even looks 3 and 4 are very far from bad. Camilla’s stylist/dresser does a fabulous job in my opinion; sartorially, the duchess gets it right with a consistency that few royals can match. And how she wears her statement hats is always immensely rewarding to view.

  2. Of course my favorite is the green coat with this hat as it is my favorite color and the contrast is so nice. I’ve said this in the past, but if we can’t get Camilla to wear more colorful spring/summer hats, then she needs to bring some color into her clothes to help balance it out.

I like the Cambridge wedding outfit a lot, but with the hat, the pastel color scheme doesn’t excite me, and honestly I think it washes Camilla out a bit.

I hope to see repeats of other hats similar to this one we haven’t seen in years. Thanks for this comparison HatQueen!

  3. Green coat for the win…by far. Very nice, easy on the eye combination. Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall currently in Aus….only 1 hat so far.

  4. Hmm.. tricky choice. I personally LOVE #2 coat, the two tone dropped hem style. It’s lovely on her. But I think #3 ensemble shows off the hat to its best advantage.

  5. I love The Duchess of Cornwall, buty apart from the fact that I love this type of hat on her; I tend to say that I haven’t seen the hat paired well witth any dress. The first time at Ascot in 2009 was with a Vivienne Westwood dress and coat that did not flatter Camilla. The dress for the Cambridges wedding was by Anna Valentine, but I do not like the green match with champagne colour and the embroidery on it. The third look, with a the light green/pistache, at Ascot was not a good outfit in my opinion. The dress underneath was more of an everydaytime dress instead of something Ascot. The white, 4th look (for the garden BP garden party) with the coffeee/milk dress did not flatter her. So I really think we have to wait: or to wear Laura’s mother-of the-bride look (2006) or another coat matching with the colour of the hat. The hat is wonderful on The Duchess of Cornwall, but the true beauty of the woman and the hat together, we still have to wait for it

  6. Look 3. I don’t generally admire her style, but she certainly has the ability to carry off these big hats. She really did look pretty in her outfit for her daughter’s wedding. I just hate those poufs slapped on the side of the head, but it certainly did work for her.

  7. I think she is my favorite royal hat wearer. I love this hat best with the solid green coat, because it makes such a nice contrast to the hat. The other outfits are too monochrome.

  8. What a fabulous hat for the Duchess. I don’t have a favourite pairing, except to note that the coat in #1 is a little awkward.

  9. She looks great in this hat and as I’m a bit sentimental and a romantic, I love the hat best with the coat she wore to the Cambridge wedding!

  10. I prefer her in the stronger colors such as green or as others mentioned the wedding coat. I do like what the designer has done with her coats to keep them interesting, though I would have passed over the taupe coat at Ascot as its ill fitting.

  11. My vote lies with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wedding – look #2. However, I do like the green outfit for a less formal affair. This hat is a keeper for Cams!

  12. Oh, love the fascinator at her daughter’s wedding. But the pairing with the picture hat that I like most was with the pale green outfit. Probably because of the contrast in color from the beige in the hat to the soft green in Camilla’s silk pleated coat. Also I think Camilla’s stylist should be congratulated in the stylish coats worn by Camilla.

  13. Wow! She looks wonderful in that fascinator! It’s a look she rarely wears, but it is so becoming. As was the hat she wore for her own wedding, which was a kind of hybrid fascinator. But of these combinations, I prefer the hat with the coat she wore to the Cambridge wedding.

  14. Camilla mixes and matches her outfits so well I always think. This shape of hat is her go to, and she also does the dress and coat thing a lot, but it works for her.

The first look is a bit haphazard, but the wedding outfit was a stunner. I really like the green look too, though that coat was better with the fascinator she wore to her daughter’s wedding.

    • The coat for Laura Parker Bowles’ wedding was slightly different- lighter shade of green with a different neckline. Although, the coat and headpiece here were fantastic together!

      • I always thought it was the same coat but it just photographed differently in the light. But you’re right (AS EVER!!) it’s the same but lighter. This was such a good look for her though….

        • I actually thought it was the same coat too (and was so glad you reminded me of it!) and went to find photos, only to discover the coats are different! Having two coats of such a distinct style in such similar shades of green is a bit perplexing. I guess she really liked the first one?!
