Catching Up Three Events in Denmark

On Tuesday, Queen Margrethe opened the royal yacht Dannebrog’s sailing season in her repeated navy felt hat with silk hatband that ties in a side bow. With her navy suit, red and white blouse and anchor brooch, the hat topped a suitably (but not to obviously) nautical ensemble.

Yesterday, the Danish Queen was at Frederiksberg Castle to visit the Army Officer School headquartered there on this, its 150th anniversary year. For this event, she repeated a straw hat with ecru crown and double grey brim. This design is intriguing- something not always said about a design in such neutral colours – with the upper brim in a kettle upturn and the lower brim, under a white band, appearing to be flat.  I want to see this closeup for a final verdict but it looks wonderfully promising.

Today, Queen Margrethe was joined by her sisters, Princess Benedikte and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, to celebrate the city of Kolding’s 750th anniversary.  The visit, which included a stop at a new exhibition held at Kolding Castle Museum, Queen Margrethe repeated her red bumper hat with navy floral patterned bow trim. Princess Benedikte wore a new pale grey straw beret base percher decorated with a pleated grey silk ruffle. Queen Anne-Marie wore an upswept brim design in natural straw that appears to be embellished.

While some of these hats are ones we are very familiar with, the two new grey designs are both distinctive- one for the brim and the other for the ruffle trim- and both impress me. What do you think of this parade of hats in Denmark this week?

  1. The dark navy hat is definitely a great one for Margrethe, and this outfit pairs much better with it compared to previous ones.

The grey and cream hat with the multi-layered brim edge is interesting for sure, but I wonder if there should be some fun trim (like a cluster of feathers?) to give it a little something extra; as it is, I find it a bit boring even with the unique brim.

It’s great to see all three sisters together, which certainly doesn’t happen very often. While I like the red pillbox for Margrethe, I still think the matching fabric trim is too much. I’m unfortunately not a fan of Benedikte’s new cocktail hat; first, the color blends in with her hair too much, but also the size seems wrong, and it’s weirdly back-heavy. Anne-Marie’s was my favorite of the three; it’s great to see her in a brimmed hat again, and this one frames her face so well, and pairs nicely with the outfit for a polished look that isn’t too formal or informal for this occasion.

  2. Hi HatQueen, from my memory, Queen Margrethe paid a State Visit to South Korea in 2008 and wore a hat with an outfit in the picture which might be familiar to the one wearing on the Army Officer School visit. However the top of the hat appears to be made from different materials or different colour which I am not entirely sure though. I guess your analysis might be able to solve this. 😀

    • Well done, Lex- that’s absolutely the same hat. I think the crown is even the same but just showing up differently in photos due to different lighting conditions. Correction made!

Just a note- from these great pictures, we can see the hat is actually has a triple brim. There is a white, flat brim that I think is attached to the crown. From there, two curved grey kettle shaped brims are attached- one above the white brim and one below, curving away from it. It’s certainly an interesting design!

  3. For those of you who have been wishing to see Queen Margrethe’s patterned dress from the red coat and hat ensemble, the Danish monarchy posted this lovely picture of the three sisters. it’s a great dress on her.

  4. I like QM grey straw hat. I don’t think the bumper style flatters her or anyone for that matter. Benedikte’s hat might be better in another color. As it is, it blends so well with her hair that, at first I didn’t realize she was wearing a hat (picture with all three). It triggered a “what the heck has she done to her hair” moment. Anne-Marie’s hat is a good basic hat for spring and summer.

  5. I really like the photo of the three sisters they are enjoying themselves.Like the fact they are all wearing hats, lovely.

  6. Queen Margrethe’s double-brimmed hat is, as you say, intriguing, but with the grey/ecru theme continuing in her clothing, I think the outfit would be rather too neutral were it not for the flash of yellow at the neck.
Princess Benedikte’s ensemble is understated but chic. (Imagine being the only one of your siblings who isn’t a queen…)

  7. I love the pictures of the Queen with her sisters. Seeing all of these photos of the Queen makes me form the opinion that I prefer her in a hat with a brim. While the red bumper hat is colorful I like her best in the ecru and navy brimmed hats.

  8. Count me in the “intrigued” group for the Queen’s grey and ecru straw. Hope we get a better look at this one. The shape and cooler shade of grey suit her well.

Benedikte’s beret is another example of a neutral color in an interesting shape, but I don’t think the beret is quite as flattering to her as her bumpers and brimmed hats. Maybe she could take her sister’s natural straw for a spin?

  9. How lovely to see the three sisters out together. It certainly has been a tough time for them. I am intrigued by Margrethe’s Grey hat. The brim is really usual. I do like her navy hat which is very flattering. She looks best in a larger brim in my opinion. The red colour is good, but sadly these hats make her look rather bald. Her sisters look very nice too. I think I prefer Anne Marie’s hat.
