Looking at this photo and the other older ones that have been shared here, I realize how fortunate we are now to have not only color photography, but also digital photography showing such detail of the subject, but even in black & white, Princess Alice was, and remains, one of the most stylish women of her time.
Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester was a very stylish woman but she was so often overlooked with commentators concentrating on Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. I think she looks wonderful in this photo. It’s both of its time and yet has a chic quality which is almost timeless.
the gloves the fur (or fox) the hat the handbag the shoes so much has a stamp of a certain period in time whereas the gentleman somehow are sort of timeless, wonderful what a story a photo can tell you
This hat appears to be ahead of its time – it has such a 60s feel about it. Her handbag also looks much more 60s. Amazingly, I like it on her. I also very much like her shoes.
Your comment about the ’60s look made me think of this one: https://royalhats.wordpress.com/2017/07/02/hat-from-the-past-98/ The combination of daisies and veiling is a striking similarity.
Good point Mitten Mary, I also was reminded of that daisy hat of HM’s.
Flowers underneath veiling must have been fashionable in the thirties: https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/08/13/article-1206431-060E1D21000005DC-820_468x595.jpg — and remember this hat? https://royalhats.wordpress.com/2017/05/03/hat-from-the-past-106/ worn 3 years after the event posted above. Princess Alice was indeed elegant!
Who knew veiling over flowers was such a trend? (Not me!) I’d have to give “Who Wore it Best?” to Princess Alice in the hat featured in this post.
Yes, and there was another British royal who wore a hat covered in daisies – was it one that looked like a swimming cap, maybe it was the Queen Mother. I’d pay good money to see QEII lose the slanted crown hats and have a slightly different shape – NOT a turban though.
Please, no turbans!
