Golden Anniversary in Norway

King Harald and Queen Sonja celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary yesterday with a service of thanksgiving at Oslo Cathedral, the same church where they married.

For the occasion, Queen Sonja wore a chocolate dotted net veil headpiece tucked into her hair. I thought the headpiece was a bit of a surprise for Sonja, who usually wears hats for major events, until it dawned that the use of the tulle veil might be a bridal reference? If that’s the case, it’s a sweet touch I can’t take issue with, especially as the colour complements Sonja’s hair and her gold suit so well.

Previously Worn: I believe this headpiece is new

Crown Princess Mette Marit wore one of her characteristic headbands, this one a new design in black with small rosettes curving around the ears. Princess Märtha Louise also wore a headband style headpiece in metallic silver. The only hat of the day was worn by Princess Astrid, who repeated her turquoise straw brimless design embellished around one side of the design with with ribbon work flowers.

  1. Absolutely gorgeous photos and wonderful to see the pure love and delight in all their faces. I particularly love Princess Ingrid’s dress. It’s very striking and age appropriate. Princess Astrid’s ensemble is such a beautiful color and I truly love her hat.

  2. Ahh, how lovely. They seem so in love after all those years, and the family so happy. For a family occasion they all look lovely too; The headpieces are a bit ‘meh’ but that’s how they roll. MM looks good – in a repeat of Sophie’s frock from Ascot I think. What a joyful day.

    • Yes, I agree! Such a beautiful family and Sonja and Harald still seem so in love. Wonderful to see. The headpieces don’t really stand out, but they suit this family well. I do wish the color of Sonja’s veiling contrasted more against her hair, but it still works. I still adore Astrid’s hat; it’s one of her best! And I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who noticed Mette-Marit is wearing Sophie’s Ascot dress haha.

      • Thanks to both of you for typing my thoughts! I’ll like more contrast between the veil and Sonja’s hair, too. Cheers to Astrid for turning out in a real hat! Lovely to see the golden couple and their family so happy.

And I thought M-M’s dress looked familiar! Surprising — I don’t think of these two as having many style choices in common.

  3. Isn’t it the same chocolate dotted net veil she used on her cream pillbox (Luxembourg wedding 20 October 2012)? I think the same gold suit too… 🙂

    • Yes Kolin, the suit does indeed look the same as that worn in 2012. If that is the case, I do think it was a lovely thought not to simply repeat the entire outfit with matching hat, but to make the ensemble a more romantic, by using the veil in a different way. So sweet!
I adore the metallic pumps with the bows that the Queen wears into the cathedral; but I notice that she is wearing a different pair of shoes for the group photo afterwards — perhaps the ones with bows needed more breaking in :).

    • Suit is the same but the veiled trim on the hat from 2012 is different than what she wore yesterday. The 2012 veil on the hat has a smaller, less open weave than yesterday’s veil, a different texture of dot and is a lighter colour.

  4. Sonja and Harold look just as in love today as they did 50 years ago! It is disappointing there was only one hat, but I think Astrid looks marvelous in that outfit. The color of the hat and dress look so beautiful against her silver hair. I think Mette-Marit’s headband was a nice contrast to her hair and looked coordinated with the black accents on her dress. I like the idea of Sonja’s dotted veil being a reference to her bridal veil, but wish it was a little more visible.

  5. Tears in my eyes looking at this, what a lovely family. The gallery of family photos is just gorgeous. They all seem to enjoy one another’s company, what a blessing for them. Here’s to many more happy years for Sonja and Harald!!
