With Queen Margrethe away for her summer cruise and crown Prince Frederik recovering from back surgery, attendance at this year’s annual Flag Day commemoration fell to remaining family members. Crown Princess Mary attended events in Copenhagen, laying a wreath at The Citadel, attending a commemoration service at Holmens Church and watching a parade at Thorvaldsens Plads at Christiansborg Castle. For these events, she repeated her black hat with felt crown and straw brim, simply trimmed with two feathers. It’s a restrained and elegant piece that paired beautifully with her floral dress.

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie were in Fredericia where they attended a worship service in the garrison church Sct. Michaelis, laid a wreath and watched a parade at Bülows Square. Princess Marie repeated her black headpiece of ruffled black silk organdie. I’ve always liked the delicate way this design frames Marie’s face and the scale, which is as large as an average percher hat, is a very flattering one for her. Black hats can look very flat and one dimensional but this piece has a lovely sense of layered texture and movement while remaining perfectly appropriate for a memorial occasion.

I used to like this hat a lot for Mary as it was one of the first hats I saw her wearing as I was starting in the world of royal hat watching. But after so many years and so many wears, it’s lost its touch for me, and now feels a bit dated unfortunately.
I still like this fascinator for Marie, but too often it seems to get lost in her dark hair from many angles, or unfortunately blends in with the dark background.
Of the four, I prefer the navy hat, but the shape is very good on Mary. I don’t tire of seeing a good hat repeated, but perhaps another black one to alternate with it would be nice…
CP Mary looks very elegant in her often worn black hat. She looks beautiful and regal.
Question: HQ, didn’t one of your very first posts on RoyalHats (Sepember 5, 2012) deal with the mauve twin of the hat today, shown below? I may like it even more than the black one. Unfortunately, these Getty photos are unbeddable, as is the case with the September 5, 2012 photo which is an extremely beautiful profile shot.

She has both pink and purple versions of this hat- you can see the post here (all twin hats we’ve reviewed here are listed under the “Twin Hats” page, accessible from the index just below this blog’s header title.

These are both lovely hats. I particularly like the ruffles on Maries’ hat, but don’t you think it is about time to invest in another black hat after a half dozen (Marie) and over a dozen (Mary) wearings? They know they have to do these engagements every year. I think it is time to mix it up a bit.
If it’s not broke, why fix it? The Danish monarchy have never been noted for ostentatious display. Not that I’d object to seeing a new hat or two, but I wouldn’t consider it their duty.
