This Week’s Extras

Reader Jimbo reminded in one of the comments this week that Queen Elizabeth repeated her purple hourglass shaped hat with pin tuck trim by Angela Kelly/Stella McLaren last Sunday to attend church at Windsor
On Wednesday, Princess Hisako attended the Tokyo send off ceremony for Team Japan to the Special Olympics Summer World Games Abu Dhabi 2019. She wore a black short brimmed hat with wide blue hatband.
Members of the Norwegian royal family were joined by Queen Margrethe  for a World Cup skiing race today at Holmenkollen. Predictably, cozy winter hats were the order of the day.
Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko attended a memorial service yesterday for the victims of the Great Tokyo Air Raid, the princess in one of her signature bowler hats with wide hatband.
Thanks to a reader who shared fantastic views of two royal hats on display at the Fashion Museum in Bath- the Countess of Wessex’s Jane Taylor hat is familiar but click over to see Queen Mary’s feather trimmed toque hat. It’s as close as we’re ever going to get to one of her signature toques.
The following new millinery designs caught my eye this week:
Purple velvet perchers with pleated crin ruffle trim by British milliner Jane Taylor
Stunning pillbox trimmed in black & white guinnea fowl feathers by Nicola de Selincourt
Pale grey straw boater with exquisite beaded snowflakes by Dutch milliner Myra van de Korput
Amazing colour blocking on this emerald, eggplant & claret felt fedora by British milliner Jess Collett
From British brand Hostie Hats, this royal blue straw domed disk with fantastic feather trim
Exquisite lace trimmed white crin disc with purple roses by British brand Guibert Millinery
Sunny yellow straw calot with feather and white hydrangeas by Irish milliner Laura Hanlon
Whimsical “Dandelion” headpiece made of white feathers by New Zealand milliner Anel Heyman
Lovely shape on this bright turquoise brimless beaded design by Dutch milliner Wies Mauduit
Smooth, clean and wonderfully graphic black straw hat by Irish brand Martha Lynn Millinery
A giant white organza ruffled picture hat by British milliner Edwina Ibbotson that I suspect we’ll see at Ascot!

And for those of you still trudging through winter, this fabulous black felt fedora trimmed with red lace appliqué, sequins and pearls made by British brand Laylaleigh Millinery.

Princess Madeleine shared this sweet snap of Princess Adrienne, who celebrated her first birthday this week
Queen Inkhosikati LaDube, 12th wife of the King of Eswantini (Swaziland) and mother of three of his children, died on Friday at age 31 in South Africa following treatment for skin cancer. She is likely best remembered here for the bright mint green ensemble and percher hat she wore to the Diamond Jubilee Muster in Home Park, May 19, 2012.

  1. Thanks to Scarfie for sharing photos from the Fashion Museum in Bath. I’ve already expressed my enthusiasm for Sophie’s ensemble, but how fun to see Queen Mary’s toque.

Doesn’t CP Mary wear fatigues well?

  2. Believe it or not, one of the most interesting hats in today’s post is the 1935 Queen Mary hat – in living color! Wouldn’t it be great to see more of these antique hats on display?

  3. I love the blue Hostie Hat. It’s perfectly suited for Zara Tindall, Princess Beatrice, Countess of Wessex, or Queen Maxima.
The Guibert Millinery white crin disc hat is suited for the Duchess of Cambridge. She’s worn similar styles. I would like to see Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie try it out as well.
The yellow Laura Hanlon is very pretty. Maybe for the Duchess of Sussex, although it’s a style preferred by the Duchess of Cambridge right now.
I think the turquoise brimless Wies Mauduit would look beautiful on the Duchess of Sussex or Zara Tindall. The color is so beautiful.

Aww, Princess Adrienne sure is sweet!

Very, very sad news about the stylish Queen Inkhosikati LaDube. So young and tragic.

  4. Thank you Hat Queen, for including my turquoise felt “bibi” (French for cute little hat) among your pick of the week. I find myself in wonderful company (the royal blue befeathered disc! the lace trimmed crin disc! the whimsical dandelion!) and can only sit at my kitchen table and sigh. Sigh that in the Netherlands we don’t have any horse races to wear those beautiful hats to. Or rather, we have horses, and some races, but no hat wearing related events.
Or maybe my blue mood is induced by the news of the mint green Queen Inkhosikati dying at the age of 31 leaving three children. How sad.

    • As much as I appreciate Fabienne Delvigne‘s creations, I always wish your Queen would discover yours, Wies Mauduit! Or maybe we should wish for Catherine-Amalia to become your patron since she might prefer to establish a relationship with a new milliner. But you make me wonder about your clientele. Where would they wear your hats?
