Hat From the Past

Royal Hats On November 22, 1976, a lavish gold-and-white themed party was held for Colin Tennant (the future Lord Glenconnor) on the Caribbean island of Mustique. Princess Margaret’s embroidered caftan and dramatically embellished silk turban made a statement memorable enough to be included in a Kensington Palace fashion exhibit several years ago.

  1. We saw this at Kensington Palace in 2016, it’s gorgeous. Princess Margaret was tiny but this made her truly stand out.

  2. In this case the turban fits the costume. And that jewel-my goodness, it’s huge! Turbans are probably my least favorite kind of hat. They don’t seem to add to the loveliness of the facial features and cover up the hair almost completely.

  3. Not a “less is more” kind of girl, was she? Other than the jeweled ornament, the turban is not so different from some of those she ordinarily wore.
