Hats From the Past

Royal Hats to the summer of 1976 and this stylish pair of bucket hats on Princess Anne and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips, spotted at Heathrow Airport. We simply don’t see many matching ‘his and her’ royal looks (uniforms excepted!) and when I came across this photo this week… well, it was just too fantastic to share.

  1. These were indeed the travel uniforms for the British Olympic Team in 1976. Here are some other members of the team, unfortunately without hats:

The uniforms for the opening Ceremony featured the gentlemen in blue, and the ladies in red and white….not sure if all the ladies hats had the rose detail at the back, or just added by the one athlete.

      • Matthew, what an awesome photo of the boxing team. I also had “bell bottom” slacks in the 70s, and many of them had LOUD plaids or stripes. In 1974 I had a red/yellow/purple striped pair which was part of my costume for my acting debut as (none other than, with NO type-casting!) Jesus in our church production of “Godspell.” What I loved even more in your photo was the rear center gentleman with the apparent broken nose from some past match, probably from an opponent’s wandering elbow on the mat!
(Wies, please don’t call ME on the carpet for once again wandering from Royal Hats!)

      • I was wondering the same thing HatQueen….thank you! And who knows, if she hasn’t reworn it yet, it still might reappear some day!!

  2. Surely they wouldn’t do twinsies otherwise! I see a glimpse of a lady behind and a shoulder to Mark’s left in the same blue. It must have been the uniform!
    Great silly hats though!

  3. I was just about to say, this must be the Olympic uniform. Anne and Mark never struck as the type to pull a Justin and Britney. Actually though, it does bear a striking resemblance!! Embed from Getty Images

    • HA!! This resemblance made my day!

I’m three days into organizing my archive of Princess Anne’s hats in preparation for her first hat inventory post tomorrow (to celebrate her birthday). To determine which hats are actually new, one must search back 3 or 4 decades. You’d be amazed how many are from the 1980s and 1990s.

        • Yes, I doubt any of us would be amazed. ha ha

I saw the photo and immediately thought it was for the 1976 Olympics. Great find HQ! They sure were a very handsome couple, weren’t they?

I’m also looking forward to the retrospective. On a side note, ITV in the UK did a documentary on Princess Anne a couple of weeks ago. Did anyone see it or know of a link those of us in North America can watch?

      • I’m not sure we will be amazed! Looking at Anne’s hat history is an archiving task of serious magnitude! I salute you in advance!

  4. It just occurred to me that both Anne and Mark competed in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal… and this might have been part of their Olympic team uniforms, worn to travel to the games.

    • Further research shows it they were indeed flying to Canada with the rest of the equestrian team for the Olympics.

I shouldn’t have been so surprised- it would have been completely out of character for Anne to have such a travel ensemble of her own, much less one matching her husband’s!
