Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to this day in 1983 that saw Princess Alexandra visit RAF Benson in Oxfordshire in a fur-trimmed hat and coat fit for a snow queen.

Thanks to reader Jake for suggesting this hat!

  1. Now that’s a lot of hat and coat! Notice very faintly that the crown matches the the coat.
I found several earlier photos of the same coat, and probably the same hat, worn to the christening of the Earl of Ulster in February 1975.
Could this be a different combination? (Shutterstock)

  2. Ahh, the always elegant Princess Alexandra! Few people could carry this ensemble off!
Yes, she looks a bit like a snow queen. Just love this look!

  3. Goodness. The hat is beautiful, but the cuffs are huge!! I agree that P. Alexandra does carry it off, though. And that smile … !

  4. It’s certainly a winter winner isn’t it. On nearly everyone else it would be ridiculous, but somehow Alexandra more than carries it off. Love it.
