Dutch Queen Attends Museum Anniversary

Queen Máxima attended the 50th anniversary of Fonds Kwadraat in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam today for an event focused on the connection between artists, professionals from the art world and art lovers.

Queen Máxima repeated her pleated red turban. This particular one of her red turbans (yes, there are several) is a bit too helmet-y for my taste but this is tempered somewhat with its pairing here with this vibrant ensemble. It’s a pairing that works well and I particularly love the hat in combination with half-up hair and hoop earrings.

  1. I note that the Queen’s right wrist is bandaged. I know I am speaking for all of you when I say I hope that the injury is not serious. We all wish her Majesty a speedy recovery.

  2. I disliked the entire outfit until I saw the 3rd photo in the 2nd gallery, of Maxima standing next to the large yellow sign and realized that she matches the sign perfectly. That made me wonder to what extent the palace might be alerted in advance of the color scheme of the event to be visited — this is not the first time I have seen a royal visitor coordinate so perfectly with a locale. However, I do not care for the skirt at all, as it looks to me like it was made from all the leftover bits of other garments and I don’t think the wide-brimmed purple hat suggested by Jake, or any other red pleated hat of different height would improve that.

However, when I see the photos that are only waist-up, showing the red hat, blue blouse, and coordinating red purse, I do like that combo and agree with HatQueen that the hairstyle and earrings complement this hat well, so maybe Máxima just needs to change her skirt!

  3. Based on past comments, I’ve not been so bothered by this hat, but today its height has been much more obvious to me than previously. I love everything about this ensemble except for the hat’s height, although I understand not wanting to wear the lower Prinsjesdag hat again so quickly (which I think would be a better choice than this hat). Ultimately though I would love to see another hat paired with this dress, like a sleek bright crimson pillbox or possibly this hat:

    • I was surprised by your suggestion of crimson until I realized it is one of the accent colors in the skirt, Jake. That could work. A small yellow calot could also be pretty with the solid blue top. But I agree that the red from Prinsjesdag would be a better choice.

      • Ah, I realized I meant scarlet (or tomato red?) and not crimson. I don’t know how I got those two mixed up before! Basically the same shade as the hat currently paired with this dress, but just a smooth, sleek pillbox/bumper pillbox of some sort instead.

  4. I really love this outgoing outfit; if you were at a party and someone was wearing it, you’d want to have a drink with them! So for Máxima, it’s perfect.

The hat rightly takes a backseat. I really don’t know how you can tell all of her red pleated hats apart, and of course why she has so many is a mystery all of its own!
