Swedish State Visit To Jordan

Earlier this month, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia paid a state visit to Jordan. For their arrival in Amman on November 15,  Queen Silvia wore a new fuchsia silk covered pillbox hat with flat bow at the back.

On its own, the hat’s classic shape is contrasted well with it’s bright hue. I’m not a fan of shiny fabrics on hats (for me, matte is more sophisticated!) and the rest of ensemble…. well, I’ll pass on that.

  1. This doesn’t appear as shiny as some outfits we’ve seen on other royals (*ahem* Natan *cough*), but I can understand shininess still being off-putting (although it doesn’t bother me here). However, I’m not a fan of the patterned dress and coat cuffs and collar; not certain what I would replace it with exactly, however.

Overall though this is still a classic Silvia look, just a little punchier with the colors, patterns, and textures.

  2. I agree with RainyMary that the ensemble has a 60s look to it, but disagree that the appropriateness is related to the wearer’s age. Rather, if a young person wears it, they have discovered a great vintage look, but if an older person wears it, they may have actually pulled it out of their closet where it has been sitting since that era! This works sometimes for Princess Anne, but not, I think, for this one. That being said, I do like the hat as a purely standalone item — perhaps Silvia will pair it in future with something else. (Though looking at the coordination of this outfit, probably not.)

  3. The whole ensemble has a 1960’s vintage look to it, if that is what you are going for.
On a young person it might be cute, however on a older person, on a state visit, it looks inappropriate and
unfortunately falls into “kitsch”. I agree, and the hat in a matte fabric, and a silk dress with a wool coat in that
beautiful color or even the dress alone in that print fabric with a solid coat would have been stunning and more
    dignified looking.

  4. When I look closely at the material of Silvia’s dress I see it is gold and hot pink which seems like a good combination, but unfortunately from farther away it looks like orange and that isn’t the best look with the hot pink. The hat is the beautiful hot pink color and is a classic which helped anchor the outfit.

  5. I actually like the ensemble. (We have certainly seen far worse than this!) The bright pink is excellent, and her hairstyle is complimented with the pillbox. A win for me.

  6. It’s a lot of look on Silvia – and much more out there than she usually plumps for. I kinda like it for that, but it’s one that’ll divide opinion for sure!
