Ascot 2024 Day 1: Princess Royal and Family

Princess Anne attended the races at Ascot racecourse today in a teal fabric hat with shallow crown and curved brim. The brim is split at the back and curled up beneath a flat bow which anchors a larger crin bow with multiple loops.

At first glance, the hat’s shape is reminiscent of styles Anne wore in the 1980s and 1990s… but my archive doesn’t have anything resembling this hat. At second glance, the slim hatband and brim binding are machine stitched on, an indication that this design is not a handmade design, as were most of Princess Anne’s hats 40 years ago.

Do any of you recall seeing this hat before?

Mike Tindall repeated his black silk top hat while Zara wore a buttercup yellow boater hat with staw crown and woven weave brim. The boater is simply trimmed with a pale aqua slim hatband tied in a bow at the back.

Zara wore a pink twin to this hat last month for a Buckingham Palace garden party. Both are great designs, the wonderfully textural brim giving such interest to the boater’s characteristically straight lines. The impact of today’s hat was, however, a little lessened by the recent wearing of the pink one.

  1. I love Zara’s hat! Both are beautiful but the butter yellow with the blue ribbon is so pretty, like a lace cookie.

Princess Anne amuses me in that she seems to pick accessories that technically match even though they don’t actually go well together. Nor does she care.

  2. LOVE LOVE LOVE Zara’s hat! She can wear it in every color and I wouldn’t mind. Princess Anne’s hat isn’t totally successful but I think for me it’s the color mismatch with the coat. Yes there is teal in the coat’s colors but it would have been better as an accent than as a whole hat. But I’m sure she doesn’t care what I think!

  3. The princess royal’s hat is a total miss for me, color, shape all of it. But lovely to see her all the same. and Zara was my overall winner today, that hat is so successful I don’t mind it in multiple colors and I love the contrasting teal hatband which looked so great with her dress.

  4. Zara’s hat is another winner, the wider brim on these boaters really suits her, others have worn them with slightly awkward shallower brims but these and knockouts. Love the wicker design too, really unusual.

Anne’s hat looks an odd colour in the light, but I saw an inside or darker pic and it was a darker green which tones better with the coat, I wonder if that’s the match she was going for?

  5. HQ, I searched for 20 minutes, hoping to find Anne’s hat worn back in the 1990s, but to no avail. This teal hat can’t be new, can it? I like it, but it seems dated. I really like Zara’s boaters – what would Mike look like wearing it? HaHa
