Ascot 2024 Day 2: Princess Royal and Family

Princess Anne attended the seconed day of racing in a new navy sinamay hat. The design features a slanted crown and wide brim, raised on one side. The underside of the brim is trimmed with machine sewn cream (what is that material?) and navy straw stripes, which are repeated as a hatband. The hat is trimmed with two large cream silk roses and a spray of navy and white feathers and curled quills.

In theory, I love a graphic navy and white hat for Anne, who is so well suited to the classic colour combination. However, with very wobbly striped trim, a machine pressed hat shape and oddly placed feathers, this ready-to-wear piece simply lacks finesse and fine finishing.

Mike Tindall repeated his black antique silk top hat. Zara wore a fluted saucer of layered pink and ivory sinamay, trimmed with an ivory silk abaca bow. Despite it’s small size and pale colour, it’s a hat with great impact and energy that makes a fantastic counterpoint to Zara’s patterned dress. It’s another great look for her this week.

  1. I will always support Princess Anne getting a new hat! New anything 😀 I think she looks great in classic navy & white. I do want to tweak the way the hat sits on her head slightly or maybe tweak where the brim starts to turn up because it seems slightly off to me. Quibble though. Zara wins again! This is a lovely look all around. Mike always looks comfortable whether he’s dressed up here or in his sporting clothes. That’s a gift.

  2. I like seeing the Princess Royal in big hats, but this one is a miss for me. Zara looks fantastic, not quite as much a favorite for me as yesterday but still stellar.

On a totally unrelated to hats note, I always love reading the ascot name tags. It’s very interesting to me that Carole Middleton’s nametag says Mrs. Michael Middleton (traditional), but Zara’s says Mrs. Zara Tindall. I wonder if it’s up to each lady how they get to be listed?

    • Traditionally/historically women were styled as Mrs. husband’s name, e.g., Mrs. Michael Middleton. The last few years women have had the option of being styled in the traditional manner or by using Ms. her own name, e.g., Ms. Zara Tindall. I think they also have the option of using Mrs. Zara Tindall but my observations are that most women who do not use the traditional styling use “Ms.” The name tags are actually called badges and they serve as your “passport” throughout the various areas of the stadium. You don’t show a ticket per se, your badge serves as your ticket. The fun badges to look for are those of the peerage or ambassadors, etc. I was once standing waiting for a race to begin and turned around to see badges with the names Earl of Carnarvon and Countess of Carnarvon. I also met and became friends with “HE The High Commissioner of the Bahamas” (that’s how his badge was styled). Fun stuff!

  3. Zara and Mike always look great and, more importantly, always seem to be having a great time. I’d love to know them. Mike has a very large head and finding an antique silk hat for him was probably a bit difficult. But his hat is beautiful and fits him perfectly enabling him to wear it perfectly. Kudos!

  4. I rather like Anne’s hat, it’s a dramatic size which is perfect for Ascot. Quibbles about the making of it, but if you don’t look too close it’s a really fun and stylish look.

  5. Love Zara’s look again. I am excited to see the word “new” in relation to Anne, but only the color combination is working for me.

  6. mixed feelings on Ann’s Hat. I think it is too large for her but I really like the side with the flowers.
    i pass on Zara’s.
the yellow hat yesterday was outstanding though.
