Ascot 2024 Day 2: Queen & Prince of Wales

Queen Camilla attended the second day of racing at Ascot Racecourse today in a second, new, blue hat! This design, in cerulean blue sinamay, follows the same angled crown and upturned brim on one side. That hat is trimmed with flying hatband sashes in rolled straw in various shades of blue.

The saturated colour is wonderful on Camilla and the hatband sashes are a high-impact trim that give such great movement (and those lovely tonal blues!) to the design. We’ve seen numerous angled crowns such as this shape on her and I’m ready for something different. What’s most disappointing for me, however, is the visible row of uneven maching stitching around the brim edge. This brim should have been hand stitched with barely visible stitches.

Thoughts about Queen Camilla’s new hat today?

  1. I’m so frustrated that the Prince of Wales has a hat that simply does not fit him. In several photos you see the hat resting on the top of his ears (there should be approximately the width of your finger between the hat brim and the top of your ear in a correctly fitting hat). And in other photos I can see a gap of space between his head and the hat. I think the poorly sized hat is one of the reasons you often see his hat at an odd angle, rather than straight on his head.

  2. Is Camilla turning into the Queen Mum? ‘Same again please, this time in teal!’

I jest, she has a few more go to shapes, nonetheless a practically identical hat two days running?! that aside, I like it, and the dress is lovely too. But something in, I don’t know, yellow today perhaps?!

  3. I love Prince William’s hat and look. Camilla’s is somewhat boring except for the color, which I think is really beautiful. I feel like this is the exact same outfit she wears every time we see her, just in a different color. I understand finding a silhouette that works for you, but I think that she is falling into a rut where each outfit is too similar, and therefore, repetitive.

  4. I like today’s hat better (despite its technical flaw)as the various colours of the sashes and their movement made it appear lighter. Yesterday’s hat, sadly, to me at least, looked like badly slipped layers of a modernist wedding cake.

i agree that the angled crown could have a rest – but love the move to saturated colours.

    • Yes to today’s hat being better because of the sashes. Overall I like the trim so much better on today’s than yesterdays.
