Royal Ascot Day 1: Wrap Up

The Duke of Kent, Earl and Countess of St. Andrews also attended the races today. The Duke of Kent repeated his grey felt top hat and Princess Alexandra repeated her pale pink straw picture hat by Rachel Trevor Morgan with silk twists and masses of mini feathers. Sylvanna looks to have repeated the pale grey straw hat with pleated white crin overlay and pink trim she recently wore to Lady Gabriella Windsor’s wedding. I’ve not been able to locate any photos of George but he would have worn a top hat.

The only other royal guest at the races today was Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, in his black silk antique top hat (Princess Haya and the couple’s children did not attend)

The first day of Royal Ascot also saw a few hatted noble heads:

Lady Carolyn Warren (daughter of the late Earl of Carnarvon, Queen Elizabeth’s former racing manager and wife of John Warren, the current one) in a monochrome blush pink straw disc hat with windowpane lattice brim, trimmed with straw twists, silk flowers and a windowpane lattice crin ruffle

Joining today’s carriage procession were Master of the Horse Lord de Lauley (shown below with the Earl of Wessex), the Queen’s Private Secretary, Edward Young and Master of the Royal Household, Vice Admiral Tony Johnstone-Burt, all in black top hats.

Royal Ascot Day 1: The Tindalls

Joining me today is Toronto-based milliner Jay Cheng, creator of Jaycow Millinery to chat about the royal hats at Ascot.

Zara Tindall topped her chintz maxi dress with a blue straw hat (the royal hat colour of the day!). Made of pale blue sinamay, the split saucer is trimmed with silk roses, straw twists and large tufts of widely-woven pale blue net veil.

Jay ChengVery stylish disk hat with the split detail, giving space for the roses to flow from front to the back side of the hat. I feel the blue of the hat could be slightly darker. It’s too much of a contrast to Zara’s tanned complexion. Overall, Zara made a graceful appearance.

Royal Hats: Agreed, Jay- the vent in the saucer base gives some variation to the shape and the trim gives this hat lightness and life. I really like the hat in combination with this dark floral print dress, which grounds it a little, and with Zara’s hairstyle, which shows it off to perfection. And I think you’re right- a shade darker would have been even better. It’s not a standout look for Zara but I think it’s a good one!

Zara’s husband, Mike, looked dapper in his black antique top hat. He hat a miniature top hat hidden inside which greatly amused the Queen and Countess of Wessex!

Royal Ascot Day 1: Princess Anne

I’m so happy to chat with Jay Cheng, creator of Jaycow Millinery, about all the royal hats at Ascot today!

Princess Anne repeated an almond straw cloche variation with diagonal crown. The brim features a contrasting chocolate straw underbrim and and tall wrap around the crown over which sits a ruched chocolate raw silk hatband. A mass of cream and dotted pheasant feathers on the side complete the hat.

Royal Hats: We have seen Anne wear this a few times and I much prefer it with the embroidered coat she wore for the Queen’s 90th birthday. Something about those two pieces pair better than today’s ensemble- the colours look more complimentary on Anne and the hat looks less dated.

Jay Cheng: It’s a very classic look, the slanted crown and the upturned brim paring with a front buttoned mid calf coat. I looks like Princess Anne just walked off the set of an old movie. The usual Princess Anne style, classic and conservative.

Royal Ascot Day 1: The Wessexes

I’m so pleased to be joined today by Toronto-based milliner Jay Cheng, creator of Jaycow Millinery.

The Countess of Wessex wore a white straw, wide brimmed bergère hat with shallow crown. The underbrim of the hat is covered in the same delicate blush pink floral print as her dress.

Jay Cheng: Again, it’s a new twist to the wide brimmed hat. The floral fabric on the underside of the brim cast a splash of radiant color to the complexion of Countess of Wessex. Overall it’s a nice match of hat style to dress silhouette. Not liking the busyness of the floral print though. I could go for just the dress in the floral print.

Royal Hats: I adore a wide brimmed hat and I also love the idea of a print on the underside of a picture hat but this iteration on Sophie somehow misses the mark. Maybe it’s the colour (white isn’t her best) or maybe it’s all that floral pattern- I suspect it the aim here was ‘charmingly romantic’ but I’m afraid this look instead veers into ‘upholstery overkill’.

Royal Ascot Day 1: Princess Eugenie

It has been my honor to welcome Toronto-based milliner Jay Cheng, creator of Jaycow Millinery to Royal Hats for the first day of the races today!

Princess Eugenie topped a pleated teal blue dress with yellow skirt panel with a bright yellow straw button percher hat. The button and headband on which it sits are embellished with clear crystal beads.

Royal Hats: When I saw that yellow stripe in the skirt of Eugenie’s teal dress, the hat suddenly made sense. The hat is quirky and cute- it’s a colour we don’t often see royal hats but that works well on a small hat and looks great against Eugenie’s dark hair.  I’m not sure this hat would jump out to me on its own in a millinery collection but it’s styled really well here. I love the teal and yellow combination and how the sleek, almost stark lines of each piece work so well together to create an interesting and balanced overall look.

Jay Cheng: I have mixed feeling about the hat. I love the bright yellow beret with wide headband. It’s very chic and eccentric and the the headband plays off on the yellow stripe of the dress. Love the ultra modern total look. However, as an Ascot hat, maybe adding a simple trim can be considered. The young generation of Royals are taking the lead in fashion!
