Ascot 2023 Day 3: Earl of Snowdon & The Chattos

The Earl of Snowdon and Lady Sarah Chatto, two children of the late Princess Margaret, attended the third day of racing last Wednesday at Royal Ascot.

The Earl of Snowdon repeated his black top hat.

Sarah’s husband Daniel was also in a black top hat while she repeated the straw braid picture hat with wide, cartwheel brim, shallow crown and slim hatband we saw her debut last month at the coronation. It’s a characteristically elegant look for her.

Ascot 2023 Day 3: The Tindalls

Zara and Mike Tindall attended the third day of racing at Royal Ascot last Wednesday. For their day out at the races, Mike repeated his black antique silk top hat.

Zara wore an ivory saucer with wide brim trimmed with silk wild flowers. With her lace dress, it made such a delicate and pretty pairing.

Ascot 2023 Day 3: The Princess Royal

Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence attended the third day of racing, Sir Timothy in his black silk hat. Princess Anne wore an ivory design with shallow crown and split brim folded up at the back that has been in her wardrobe for several decades. I like the shape of this brim and liked the light hat contrasted with her emerald suit. In person, it was a sharp look for her.

Ascot 2023 Day 3: Duchess of Edinburgh

The Duchess of Edinburgh was accompanied to the third day of racing by her father, Christopher Rhys-Jones. Sophie wore a blue parasisal straw saucer hat trimmed with feathers, jinsin loops, blue silk leaves and handmade silk pansies to match the print of her dress.

The flowers on the hat were made by Anne Tomlin, a master flower maker I’m incredibly fortunate to have as one of my floral tutors. What a thrill it was to see these beauties while visiting her studio a week before the races! Anne’s specialty is hyper realism and she created the flowers by overlapping layers of cut silk. They are absolute works of art and it’s so unfortunate their incredible detail was lost a bit amidst all the other trim.

Ascot 2023 Day 3: The King & Queen

The king and queen again led the royal carriage procession on the third day of Royal Ascot, Ladies’ Day.

King Charles repeated his black antique silk top hat.

Queen Camilla wore a new hat in pale seafoam green sinamay. The rounded crown is offset with a sharply sidesweeping brim which is entirely rimmed in overlapping, sharply trimmed feathers. A hatband (organdie, I think) wraps around the design multiple times.

This hat is all about the feathers, which give such wonderful texture and movement to the design. It was incredible in person.
