Scandinavian Crown Princesses Meet in Norway

Last Friday, May 9, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark met Crown Princess Mette Marit of Norway in her home town, Kristiansand to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Heligoland.

Crown Princess Mette Marit wore a fascinator headband that featured an large, flat navy dahlia flower. She seems to have a soft spot for these embellished headbands and while this one is more attractive than some of the others we have seen on her, I’m not entirely sold on this millinery look.

Crown Princess Mary repeated her black wool beret-style calot hat. With her tweed suit, the overall look was very streamlined and elegant.

These two crown princesses seemed as happy to see each other as we are to see them, which always tickles my fancy. Between the fancy fascinator and the stremlined calot, which one of these royal hats was your favourite?

Hat Mystery: Queen Margrethe’s Straw Hat

Royal Hats  I usually use a Hat Query post to answer a reader question but I’m turning the tables today, dear readers, and posing a question to all of you! Here goes.

Last week, Queen Margrethe was pictured in Shanghai in this classic straw hat:

The last time she wore this hat, however, it looked like this:

Visiting the  Aarhus State Gymnasium, August 30, 2013

My first thought was that this was a completely different hat. The brim of the hat worn last week in Shanghai noticeably curves up in front while the brim on the hat worn last summer (above) curves down. I was about to declare these different hats when two more photos from the royal couple’s summer cruise last year caught my eye.

Notice how this straw hat has the same textured weave as the hat we saw last week in Shanghai? And the distinct finishing seam around the brim? And how the brim curves up in the back but down in the front?  I think this is all the same hat!  If I’m right, Margrethe simply changes out the coloured band around the crown to coordinate with whatever outfit she is wearing. I suppose she wore it backwards last week in Shanghai for some variety.

There you have it, folks- I think this is the same hat. I’m curious, however, what you think of my hypothesis. Do you think this is the same hat?

Queen Margrethe Celebrates Freedom Monument

Queen Margrethe attended the re-dedication of the Freedom Monument in Silkeborg today (the monument celebrates those who resisted German occupation of Denmark during World War II. For this event, she repeated turquoise porkpie hat. I think this confirms Margrethe’s love of this hat because she certainly has worn it a lot. And why not? It is a lovely hat on her. I’m just ready to see something different…

Queen Margrethe Opens Cruise Terminal

Queen Margrethe of Denmark officially opened the new cruise ship terminal in Copenhagen on Friday afternoon. For this nautical engagement, Margrethe repeated her red wool hat and coordinating suit. We saw the best picture of this ensemble at this event but I’m afraid it has not changed my opinion. I would love to see this suit topped with a chic black hat instead of this one, which is just trying too hard to coordinate. What do you think?

Milestone Birthday: Princess Benedikte

Princess Benedikte of Denmark is celebrating a milestone birthday today. As the younger sister of Queen Margrethe, we don’t see Princess Benedikte at many royal events but when we do, she is hard to miss. Her hat style is vibrant, textured and full of personality. To offer our own congratulations for her 70th birthday today, here is a look back at some of her colourful hats.

I appreciate Princess Benedikte’s bold and colourful hat style and the adventurous way she is not afraid to try modern, structured shapes. In the over-60 royal crowd, her hats are among my favourites (the red wool stacked beret above is utterly fantastic!). What do you think of Princess Benedikte’s millinery wardrobe?
