Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to 40 years ago this month when Queen Elizabeth wore this green hat while on tour in New Zealand. The use of the floral fabric not just on the hatband but as an overlay on the underside of the brim is certainly a distinctive touch.

Royal Hats to March 28, 1969 which saw the start of another Belgian state visit to Denmark. A young Princess Margrethe looks rather striking in a floral frock and halo brimmed hat.

Hat From The Past

Royal Hats to this day, thirty four years ago, and a sky blue calot hat worn on the Princess of Wales’ first tour of Australia. Calot hats are, by nature, fairly simple shapes but the twisted edge, net tulle veil and silk flower on the back of this John Boyd design made it anything but boring.

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to this day in 1985, an Imperial royal visit to Ireland and an empress (who was then a crown princess) in a flat crowned, flower trimmed boater hat.  While she doesn’t wear brimmed hats these days, this hasn’t always been the case for Empress Michiko.

Royal Hats to March 13, 1958 and a pair of casque and calot hats. While Queen Elizabeth’s casque hat features a wave detail around the perimeter, a young Princess Anne’s hat has a fur cuff brim that matches her coat and muff.
