Hats From the Past

Royal Hats forty years ago to this day in 1977 and the christening of Peter Philips at Buckingham Palace. Turbans seem to be the style of the day and the Queen, her mother, her sister and daughter all wore versions in blue. The colour coordination is amusing, as is the slight air of ‘swimming costume’ eminating from the Queen Mum’s blue feathered design and the ‘fallen chef’s hat’ look of Princess Anne’s striped design. Thankfully, this is not a millinery era that looks likely to come back en vogue.

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to a Faberge exhibition, held 68 years ago this month in London, attended by the late Princess Margaret. She is photographed here with the great Russian jeweller’s son, Eugene Faberge, examining a small jewelled box. Her hat, a conical design with short brim, bow and veil, is equally memorable.

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to 1966 and a perplexing hat worn by Princess Margaret to a service at Westminster Abbey. To my dear reader sleuths- any front views you can provide to help make sense of this hat (shape, colour, material) would be greatly appreciated!

Hat From the Past

Royal Hatsthirty-five years ago to this day in 1982 when a young Princess of Wales visited Wales in a small blue felt tricorn hat with raised Breton brim, veil wrap and ostrich feather at the back. The unique hat shape was a go-to one for her in the early 1980s during the first years of her royal life.
