to a pair of hats, worn 96 years ago. Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg might not be familiar faces but their youngest son certainly is. Princess Alice’s wide brimmed hat with tall crown and wide hatband certainly is a beauty.

111 years to this photo of a young Princess of Wales (as was the future Queen Mary’s title in 1906) in the most marvellous flower and feather trimmed hat with a young Prince George, her fourth son and future Duke of Kent, catching a ride.

to August 31,1979 and the christening Prince Carl Philip (whose second son with wife Princess Sofia arrived yesterday on this same date!). Queen Silvia’s peach ringed headpiece with roses made a glamorous statement at the time and inspired several more recent Swedish royal looks.

twenty years ago to July 18, 1997 and a visit to Derbyshire that saw Queen Elizabeth in a hat with pleated white silk crown and transparent yellow straw upfolded brim. We don’t often see this kind of pleated crown detail on royal hats which makes this design stand out- funny that I don’t recall seeing it before. Was this hat new for you as well?
