Princess Benedikte was in Essen, Germany, yesterday to attend the opening of the International Plant Fair (IPM) and to unveil a new variety of rose. For this event, she wore a new black felt hat with gently rounded crown and flat brim, simply trimmed with a black Petersham ribbon hatband.

With news of Princess Eugenie’s engagement this week, I thought we’d continue our red hat inventory series with a peek into the millinery closet of this young York Princess. We have seen Princess Eugenie in four red designs so far:
Designer: Philip Treacy; Sarah Cant
First Worn: June 12, 2010; June 21, 2014
3.
4.
Designer: both are Sarah Cant
First Worn: May 24, 2016; Dec 25, 2016
This quartet of red hats shows the recent popularity of smaller cocktail perchers, with three of the four falling into this category. Even with this similarity of style, there is considerable difference in shape, shade, material and trimmings from statement bows to abstract wire flowers to curling felt leaves. The one design that stands out here as unique is #2, both for its shape and for the red and white stripes appliqued on the grey brim. None of these hats are boring and all require a certain degree of confidence to pull off.
Interestingly, each of these designs has been worn just once, bringing in questions of ownership (are they borrowed? purchased?) and hopes that we’ll see them repeated. I’ve always thought that #2 would make a smashing Christmas hat.
What do you think of Eugenie’s red hats?

Princess Beatrix was in Utrecht today to take part in a symposium of the inter-religious network “In Freedom Connected”. For this event, she wore a black straw hat with asymmetrical crown and upswept brim. The hat is trimmed with a silver silk hatband printed in a lattice motif that follows the same sloped shape as the hat’s crown along with a large black straw loop at the side

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh attended Sunday service yesterday morning at St Lawrence Church in Castle Rising, close to their Sandringham estate. The Queen used the occasion to debut a lovely new hat in dark green felt. Following the shape of a modified cloche, the design features a high, stacked asymmetrical crown and short brim. A wide dark green hatband is punctuated with an under-hatband in lime green and the hat is trimmed with two large dark green quills and a knot of dark and lime green felt. The lime green accents work beautifully to lighten and brighten the dark hued hat and the trim gives just the right amount of pizzazz while keeping the overall design balanced. It’s a great hat on Her Majesty- one I would have preferred on Christmas Day over the orange design she wore.
