Belgian State Visit To India

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde have embarked on a state visit to India that will continue through this weekend. For today’s visit to the Ghandi memorial and ceremonial welcome reception at the Indian Presidential palace in New Delhi, the Belgian queen wore a new hat in blush pink straw.

From a distance, the smooth lines of the hat, a sort of saucer variation with raised back, seem a good counterpoint for Mathilde’s lace dress; the colour, while a little pale, is pretty and elegant. At closer view, however, the hat doesn’t stand up so well. The silk crescent on the saucer is unevenly stitched and the straw bubble overlay, while random from the front, looks unpolished from the back. The hat ends up looking clunky and thrown together, especially against the exquisitely delicate lace dress.

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats seventy-eight years to November 9, 1939 when the Queen Mother visited evacuated children in the Sussex countryside. Her hat is a fascinating structure with brim curved up around the top of a calot base, seas all covered liberally in feathers. One of the photos below is mirrored from its original (the bottom one I`d guess, based on brooch placement) but the views still give a good look at this most interesting hat.

Princess Alexandra Visits Veteran Care Facility

Princess Alexandra was in Worthington, Leicestershire, yesterday to visit staff and patients at Care For Veterans, a rehabilitation and nursing facility for former Service personnel of all ages. For this visit, she repeated a hat in dove grey straw with tall, flat crown and cartwheel brim trimmed with a large straw-petalled flower. Bow loops in grey straw and a few slim grey feathers complete the design.

The size and scale of this hat are typical for Alexandra who seems to prefer millinery with taller than usual crowns. Straw keeps this design light while the monochrome palate makes it work for autumn- it looks airy but not completely summery. Head to hem ensembles in grey can be heavy and drab but this one, thanks in great part to the hat, is light and fresh.
