Danish Royals Celebrate 500 Years Since Reformation

Members of the Danish royal family joined their Parliament’s celebration ceremony for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation today in Copenhagen. Queen Margrethe led the royal delegation in the purple pillbox she wore earlier this week in Italy. It’s a quick repeat for this sequin and feather trimmed hat, one that we all seem to agree is a great one for her.

Crown Princess Mary repeated her black calot hat. The feather and felt leaf spray that was added to the piece back in 2015 for the opening of parliament seems to be a permanent addition, as it has adorned the hat ever since. This trim a much needed focal point to the simple design, which was paired beautifully (as always) with Mary’s black and cream ensemble.

Princess Marie used the occasion to debut a new hat in a stunning deep peacock blue felt. The percher design, with a button base, is trimmed in overlapping felt leaves. The design has a very similar feel to a grey calot hat in Crown Princess Mary’s wardrobe and makes a great addition for Princess Marie- the colour is so wonderful on her. I just wish she had placed it further up on her head, centred over the arch of her eyebrow.

Princess Benedikte repeated her fuchsia bumper hat. The pink bow that adorned the piece last time we saw it has been removed again, leaving just the purple feather koosh ball which coordinates well with Benedikte’s coat. The hat is a beautiful colour and adds a punchy note to her ensemble.

It’s not often that we can line up four brimless royal hats at a single event and say that all four pack strong style punch. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this millinery quartet.

Imperial Royal Memorial and Tour

Last Friday, Princess Yuriko of Mikasa attended a service at Toshimagaoka Imperial Cemetery in Tokyo to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the death of her late husband, Prince Takahito. For this memorial, she wore a veiled black bumper hat.

Over the weekend, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited Fukuoka and Oita Prefectures. For a visit to a robotics innovation center on Saturday in Kitakyushu City, the Empress wore a large white (or cream? oyster?) domed saucer trimmed with a large bow that looked to be embroidered in a lattice pattern with metallic thread.

Previously Worn: the bow seems new… who knows about the saucer.

The focus of the visit, the 37th National Meeting for the Healthy Ocean, took place Sunday in Munakata City. Empress Michiko wore a smaller scale saucer in pale bluey-grey trimmed with a multi-looped silk bow that circled around the left side of the design. The sheen of the silk bow gave a bit of contrast to the hat, which was, I suspect, covered in the same fabric as Michiko’s suit and caped jacket. The shade of blue is more becoming on her than the dull grey we often see her wear.

The visit concluded yesterday with a stop in Kitakyushu Eco-Town Center. Empress Michiko repeated a familiar hat for this leg of the visit, a denim blue saucer trimmed with an angular, flat folded blue and gold bow.

The last hat has made seven appearances during the past two years, leading me to wonder if the Empress’ larger saucer hats (like the first one) are repeated with interchangeable trims to coordinate with her attire. I seldom see them repeated as much as the blue hat… but perhaps, it is simply a favourite. What do you think of this group of hats?

Queen Margrethe In Italy

On Friday, Queen Margrethe’s visit to Rome took her to the Presidential Palace Palazzo Quirinale  where she met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella. For this meeting, the Danish Queen repeated her purple felt  slightly domed pillbox with sequin trim and side feather spray.

It’s a great hat for Margrethe- in scale, shape but particularly in colour, as she wears such saturated, jewel tones so well. On the hat’s first outing we didn’t get a look at the accompanying dress- clearly, the two pieces were designed to go together, with the horizontal bodice pleats making subtle reference to the black sequins that trim the perimeter of the hat. I think t’s an elegant and striking ensemble.

…our good friend Josine over at Mode Koningin Maxima noticed a bow separating the two designs. Milliner Fabienne Delvigne confirmed the two hats are in fact, different (with slightly different crown shapes). The whole thing leaves me scratching my own head and asking, WHY?
