Epsom Derby Day 2018

The Investec Derby Festival was held at Epsom Downs Racecourse today and as in years past, a number of royal spectators were in attendance. Queen Elizabeth repeated her lavender straw hat with tall crown and flat brim, trimmed with silk leaves and peony blooms.

It has been four years since this hat’s last outing and today’s reappearance reminds me of some of its best features- the delicate, trimmed green feather leaves, the perfect summery shade of purple, and the wonderful contrast provided by those silk peonies. The crown is slightly higher than what we usually see on the Queen but the molded shape is unique and balanced by its diagonal slope and the wide straw hatband.

An interesting note, the coat paired with this hat today is usually paired with a different purple hat (see here). Coat swaps aside, the floral trim on the hat clearly links with the ensemble’s floral print dress- a mix I think works best with a glimpse of the dress peeking out from the coat rather than side by side, although it’s always a treat to see the hat directly against its matching dress.

Princess Alexandra used the occasion today début a very sharp new hat.

In pale pink straw, the hat follows a traditional boater shape with flat crown and brim. Its design flourish is a wide pink straw hatband, edged on both sides in a stripe of black straw and jauntily twisted at the side. This is an entirely new shape for Alexandra, who usually favours hats with much higher crowns. The scale and shape are fantastic on her and the hat’s styling today, with her elegant pink suit and patterned scarf, was spot on.

Today’s top race was won by jockey William Buick on Masar, a horse from Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin stable. For this victory, Princess Haya was head-to-hem in red, a colour she always looks spectacular in. Her hat, a vertical saucer, is trimmed with a giant silk bloom tucked beneath the brim of the raised side. We often see Haya in larger, wider brimmed hats and the smaller scale of this one, thanks in part to its vertical position, is especially flattering for her.

Lady Carolyn Warren, daughter of Queen Elizabeth’s late friend and racing manager the 6th Earl of Carnarvon (known by his nickname “Porchy”) and wife of Her Majesty’s current racing manager John Warren, wore a wide brimmed cream straw hat with angular shaped crown and slightly upswept brim on one side. The hat is trimmed with a slim multi-layered hatband, cream silk roses and feathers. It’s an elegant design that pairs beautifully with her aqua tailored suit.

The races at Epsom always provide a taste of racing hats to come later in June and wow- what a way to whet our appetites! If this group of royal hats is anything to go by, we’re in for a fantastic month ahead.

Princess Haya shared this family photo which shows Sheikha Jalila in a royal blue vertical saucer hat trimmed with a cluster of butterflies on the underside of the raised brim. Jalila wore a similar hat in white yesterday- jump back to this updataed post to see it.

Royal Ascot 2017 Day 2: Dubai Royals

Royal Ascot | Royal Hats For the second day of the races today, Princess Haya topped an oyster silk coat dress with waved black and white headpiece. In straw, the vertical black straw design is edged in a wide stripe of white straw and trimmed with a white silk rose under the raised brim and a cluster of feathers.

Royal Ascot 2017 Day 1: Dubai Royals

Royal Ascot | Royal Hats Princess Haya bint Hussein attended the first day of Royal Ascot today with her daughter, Sheikha Jalila, both in eye catching hats. Princess Haya’s white picture hat with flat crown and wide, mushroom brim is trimmed with the same navy lace that adorns her dress and a dark blue silk hatband.

Sheikha Jalila made her Ascot debut in a hat described by the designer as a “Straw teardrop percher, trimmed with abaca silk bow with petersham ribbon edging”. While the hat photographs here as navy (thanks to bright sunshine at the races this year!), I believe it is actually black. Her father, Sheikh Mohammad, repeated his black silk top hat.

Derby Day At Epsom

Queen Elizabeth took in yesterday’s Derby Day races at the Investec Derby Festival at Epsom Racecourse. For this annual event, she repeated her yellow hat in textured straw with plain yellow straw hatband and pink and yellow silk blooms. The warm weather prompted Her Majesty to remove her coat, giving us an unusual look at the hat with its coordinating dress below. Seeing the full context of an ensemble is so valuable and makes me lament how seldom we get this opportunity.

The Queen was joined by her cousin, Princess Alexandra, who wore a natural straw hat with tall, domed crown and short cartwheel brim, swathed in a widely woven net tulle veil. This large crowned shape is such a familiar one for her (she has twins in ice blue, lilac, black and navy to name a few) that I initially assumed this piece was a repeat however, it is new. In the bright sun today, the hat looks white but it is actually natural straw (something confirmed at its next outing).

Princess Haya bint Al Hussein topped her pale yellow dress with a cream straw hat with shallow crown and large, oval brim. Trimmed with a large pale yellow silk rose and a twisted straw ribbon and worn slightly askew on her head, the look is soft but still high fashion (just as we expect with Haya).

Princess Michael of Kent and Lady Gabriella Windsor are often spotted at the Epsom races but I’ve not spotted any photographs of them this year- please share if you do! In the meantime, I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts about this trio of pastel royal hats.
