Hat From the Past
to this day in 1942, 78 years ago, and a wonderful array of hats worn to the christening of Prince Michael of Kent. Princess Marina (holding her son) and the Queen Mum’s jaunty brimmed designs are particularly wonderful and add an air of lightness and fun amidst the military uniforms and tragedy that would soon befall this family (the Duke of Kent, Prince Michael’s father, would be killed in an airplane crash just 21 days later).

Hat From the Past
73 years to a quartet of royal hats worn in May 1947 to the Chesea Flower Show. Longtime reader Mitten Mary sent me this photo yesterday, insightfully drawing attention to unique and lovely shape of Princess Elizabeth (if you can look past her linebacker fur vest) and Princess Margaret’s hats, and the dashing bowler on King George VI.
This was an entirely new photo to me- immense thanks to Mitten Mary for sharing it!

On November 22, 1976, a lavish gold-and-white themed party was held for Colin Tennant (the future Lord Glenconnor) on the Caribbean island of Mustique. Princess Margaret’s embroidered caftan and dramatically embellished silk turban made a statement memorable enough to be included in a Kensington Palace fashion exhibit several years ago.
