Dutch Royal Family Celebrate Koningsdag

As Queen Máxima’s hat for Koningsdag was a doughnut of disappointment,  us fans of royal millinery were forced to turn to other members of the Dutch Royal family for more palatable hats. Kicking off the other hats we saw today is our favourite former Queen, Princess Beatrix, who repeated her pale grey-lavender four-tiered brimless hat with side spray of feathers. While I’m not terribly keen on the dull colour and the concentric circles of this hat make me want to randomly exclaim, “Bull’s Eye!”, it is such a classic hat shape for Princess Beatrix that I’m not going to complain. It’s nice to see her back in the spotlight and clearly enjoying herself.

My favourite look of the day was Princess Laurentien. She looked effortlessly chic in this cornflower blue fascinator which paired so well with her sublime outfit and fantastic haircut. This is the perfect event for a fascinator and this is how it should be done.

Princess Margriet also wore a fascinator in classic black and white. Classic colour, but not style, I’m afraid. This headpiece looked like a chicken was nesting in her hair. But as bad as that sounds, it was still an improvement over the doughnut.

This was not the best day in Dutch Royal millinery history, I’m afraid. Did you like any of the hats today? Hat bombs aside, it was evident that this family was having a joyfully marvelous time together and that is always wonderful to see.

Birthday of Princess Margriet

Royal HatsPrincess Margriet of the Netherlands celebrates her 71st birthday today (take a look back at her 70th birthday hat retrospective last year). Since here sister’s abdication last year, we have seen less of Princess Margriet than we have in the past – she has certainly earned retirement but fewer engagements inevitably means fewer hats. Margriet has worn hats of all shapes and sizes throughout her royal life. With her short hairstyle, however, I think she looks best in a small, embellished hat. Wouldn’t this beautiful “Black Watch” cocktail hat (the work of Vancouver milliner Kelly Dunlap who designs “The Saucy Milliner” label) be marvelous on Canadian-born Princess Margriet?

Dutch Enthronement: Princess Margriet and Family

Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, younger sister of Princess Beatrix, looked beautiful today in a pale green hat. The crown of her hat was in the same fabric as her dress and featured a straw brim and bow. Even though the brim looked a little like the rings around Saturn, I liked how the tilted back angle framed her face.

Princess Marilène, wife of Princess Margriet’s son Prince Maurits, looked statuesque and striking in a magenta pillbox.A simple pillbox is a great compliment to a patterned lace dress but when the whole lot is in bright pink, its a LOT of bright pink.

Princess Annette, wife of Princess Margriet’s son Prince Bernhard, wore a dramatic black straw hat with a sharply curved upturned brim. I liked her monochrome hat well enough but felt it was a lost against her ornately patterned dress and skirt.

At first glance, I thought Princess Anita (wife of Princess Margriet’s son Pieter Christiaan) did not wear a hat. It was only when I rewatched the royal arrivals did I notice she wore a small burgundy fascinator on the left side of her head. Anita had brain surgery a few months ago and it was great to see her looking so well.

Princess Margriet’s final daughter-in-law, Princess Aimée, who is married to Prince Floris, provided the biggest hat surprise of the day. It took me a minute to place this hat… as you’ll see below, Queen Máxima wore it during a November 2011 tour of the Dutch Caribbean! Aimée is also wearing one of Máxima’s maternity gowns. While I found this family fashion-swap quite heart warming, I was not a fan of this hat and gown combination.

Milestone Birthday: Princess Margriet

Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, younger sister of Queen Beatrix, celebrates her 70th birthday today. To commemorate this milestone, I thought it would be fun to look back at some of her most memorable hats.

I love watching the progression of Margriet’s hat fashion throughout the years. These days, her hats are smaller and she seems to be choosing fascinators for the big events. I LOVE a woman who can rock a fascinator over the age of 60!  What do you think is Princess Margriet’s best hat moment?

Prinsjesdag 2012

It’s Prinsjesday (Prince’s Day) today, and that means we’re in for some wild hats! Prinsjesday is the day on which the reigning monarch of the Netherlands (currently Queen Beatrix) addresses a joint session of the Dutch Senate and House of Representatives  in The Hague. It’s been a tradition in Holland since the 18th century and the dress code harkens back to that time period- full length gowns with hats. It’s glorious.

Queen Beatrix wore one of her signature chicken feather nest hats. It’s a dramatic hat for certain but I’m just not sure these feathers were the most flattering colour against her pale complexion and hair.

Princess Margriet, wore a grey net and feather fascinator on the top of her head. To me, it looks like grubby bath sponge.

Princess Máxima was a vision in magenta. Not many can carry off such a strong colour from head to toe, but Máxima is in a category unto herself. I thought the shape of the hat, designed by Fabienne Delvigne, was not quite compatible with the more delicate cut of her dress but now I’m nitpicking- anyone who can pull off a huge magenta hat is someone I’ll cheer loudly for. Go Máxima!

Máxima’s sister-in-law Princess Laurentien sported a large purple cabbage rose fascinator. It veered dangerously close to eye patch territory, but we’ll let it go this time. The piece works well with her hairstyle.

Great day of hats in the Netherlands today, don’t you agree?
