Ascot Hats From the Past

Royal Hatsto June 21, 1962 and the arrival of Princess Marina and her daughter, Princess Alexandra, to Royal Ascot. I adore the shape and austerity of Princess Marina’s straw upswept design and must concede that Princess Alexandra’s floral helmet/turban is one of the most attractive iterations of this odd shape I can remember. I’d be remiss here not to also mention the striking resemblance between mother and daughter- quite remarkable.

Ascot Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to June 14, 1966, nearly 53 years ago, and a pair of Danish princesses (who were 2nd cousins, once removed) arriving at Ascot. The glamorous Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, wore a feather covered pillbox while a fresh-faced Princess Benedikte of Denmark wore a straw Breton hat.

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats another hat with upswept brim worn to the races, 78 years ago today. Princess Marina’s placement of this chic design, forward over one eye, fits eerily well with current fashion. I suppose style inevitably travels full circle.

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats Further proof that genetics runs strong in the British Royal Family- Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent and a young Princess Alexandra of Kent with the Duke of Edinburgh at the closing ceremonies of the London Olympics on this day in 1948. I see multiple generations of strong family resemblance in this photo- first, between Princess Alexandra and her mother and second, between Princess Alexandra and both Princess Anne and Zara Phillips when they were the same age.
