Norwegian Royals Kick Off Constitution Bicentennial

The Norwegian family attended the official opening of the bicentennial celebration of the Norwegian Constitution on Sunday night at Eidsvoll, where Norwegian independence was declared. For this celebratory evening outdoors, Prince Sverre Magnus, Princess Ingrid, and Crown Princess Mette-Marit were suitably attired in cozy knit wool hats.

Christmas Eve with the Norwegian Royals

The Norwegian Royal Family were decidedly less formal with their Christmas millinery choices than their British royal cousins. On Christmas Eve, Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Princess Ingrid both turned up to church in warm knitted hats. I suspect these hats were chosen more for function than for appearance… but I think a woolen beret or cloche would have been preferable, especially paired with their lovely dress coats.

Milestone Birthday: Princess Mette-Marit

Royal Hats
Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway celebrates her 40th birthday today. To celebrate, we’re taking a trip back through time to look at how her her hat style has evolved since entering royal life.

Mette-Marit’s hats were initially quite simple and with minimal embellishment. The only statements we see here are the overly rounded or square shapes on the hat’s crown.

A few years into royal life, Mette-Marit wore a series of similar hats from Philip Treacy. The stronger shapes, larger brims and signature Treacy looped bow suited her well.

By 2006, Mette-Marit’s confidence in her royal role was displayed by a bolder millinery style….

… which included lots of fascinators!

More recently, Mette-Marit has moved to smaller, simpler, more streamlined pieces.

I have mixed feelings about Mette-Marit’s recent millinery choices- rumours are that the princess suffers from chronic headaches and if this is indeed the case, hat wearing might not be a comfortable option for her.

Swedish Royal Wedding: Norwegian Royals

The Norwegian Royal Family might not be first cousins with the Swedish Royal Family but they are close friends. Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Princess Märtha Louise and Ari Behn were all in attendance at the wedding today. Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore the Amethyst Necklace tiara. While I love the coloured gemstones, this is another spiky and rather sparse tiara that I think looks better backed by some seriously high hair.

Princess Martha Louise wore small version of Queen Maud’s Pearl and Diamond Tiara, the same tiara she wore for her wedding eleven years ago. While I love this tiara on Martha Louise, I think I would have preferred her to pull a switcheroo with Mette Marit and wear the Amethyst Necklace tiara to compliment her amazing lavender gown. Elegant and regal are not words usually associated with Martha Louise’s fashion but they certainly applied today. Wow. WOW.
