Trooping the Colour: York, Wessex and Phillips Families

Royal Hats

We continue our look at Trooping the Colour today, turning our attention to hats worn by members of the Queen’s immediate family. We’ll start with Princess Beatrice, who repeated her structured gold felt percher hat with curved orange trim. The last time she wore this piece, a number of readers did not like the choice of a felt design for a summer event. Today’s greyer skies and cooler weather in London make this a moot point in my mind- I really like how Beatrice styled this design to pop against her streamlined navy dress (it’s reads as a ray of sunshine!) and I think she wears it well.

Princess Eugenie topped her teal green suit in a cream straw saucer hat with raised slice brim, trimmed with purple and brown pheasant feathers. This hat is all about the trim- an unusual colour combination that looks surprisingly striking on the neutral hat. I love the hat’s unexpected pairing with Eugenie’s green suit which shows it off so well. The York Princesses get their fair share of fashion criticism but I think they have looked fantastic this weekend.

The Countess of Wessex also veered from her go-to cocktail shapes and joined the calot craze! Her calot hat, in palest pink straw, is covered in silk flowers and leaves in the same hue. The effect is a floral wreath that frames her face- it’s exceptionally feminine and soft. After seeing Sophie in edgier statement pieces over the past few years, this design makes for quite a style departure.

Lady Louise  Windsor wore another small headpiece today, this one a spray of silver oak leaves and acorns. It’s wonderful to see her start experimenting with hats and headpieces this year and this one is darling, especially tucked into her braided hairstyle.

Autumn Phillips topped her blue frock with a straw disc saucer hat trimmed with feather quills and straw looped bow. The hat reads pale blue here but according to the designer, it is silver (see a better photo of the colour from the designer here). which makes more sense with Autumn’s cerulean blue dress. While we can’t see the hat in great detail here,I do think Autumn’s chignon sets it off, beautifully.

Zara Tindall wore an interesting magenta straw beret cocktail hat trimmed with side mass of grey silk roses and a mass of Lady Amhurst feathers. Zara wears these fancifully embellished cocktail hats so very well and I think this could be a great hat, if only we had a better look!

It’s not often that we see so many new hats worn by such a large group in the space of a weekend and there is much to discuss! What do you think of this group of British royal hats?

90th Birthday Service of Thanksgiving: Princess Anne and Family

Royal Hats

Let’s continue our look at the marvellous royal hats worn today for the service of thanksgiving celebrating the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth. Her daughter, The Princess Royal repeated her tan straw hat with wide chocolate straw and duponi silk bands around the crown and chocolate straw underbrim. The extravagant feather trim on this piece ties in very nicely with the impressive embroidery on Princess Anne’s jacket and chocolate accessories tie the ensemble together into a very harmonious look. It’s not my favourite palate on Princess Anne but she wears it well.

Anne’s daughter-in-law, Autumn Phillips, topped a lovely teal dress with a coordinating hat. The bespoke percher design features bumper shaped base wrapped in widely woven gold lace and a mass of gold, caramel and cream feathers at the back. The gold and teal colour scheme is unexpected and works beautifully with Autumn’s blonde hair.

Zara Tindall continued a string of beautiful percher hats with a this design in pale blue straw with an angular, sloped base, vertical navy feather trim and straw bow. On its own, the strong contrast between the hat’s straw and feather trim might not be to my liking but paired with Zara’s navy floral dress, it works well. She always looks amazing in blue.

Well, dearest readers, that’s three more hats in our review of today’s British royal celebration. What do you think of these three designs?

British Royals Celebrate Queen’s Birthday

Members of the British Royal Family gathered this weekend at Windsor for a jam-packed weekend of events that combined two favourites- the Queen and the Royal Windsor Horse Show. Over the weekend, Her Majesty was spotted enjoying the show as a kerchiefed spectator.

To present the day’s awards, she popped back to the palace to change. On Saturday, she repeated her magenta hat with silk crepe crown and edging around the straw brim, trimmed with flowers and striped feathers.

For yesterday’s awards, Queen Elizabeth repeated her pale blue straw hat with domed crown, asymmetrical upturned brim, and silk flower and ribbon trim. While the photo here does neither the hat nor the wearer justice (jump over here to see much better views during its last outing), it remains a beautiful piece and it was nice to see the Queen in it again.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who is an accomplished carriage driver, took part in the show throughout the weekend. He looked dapper and relaxed in a white straw fedora with curved brim along with two wool plaid flat caps.

Prince Michael of Kent also joined in some carriage driving, looking most distinguished in a cream straw fedora. The high crown and exaggerated pinches on this piece give it an interesting shape and the pleated navy band adds a refined touch.

Lord Frederick and Lady Gabriella Windsor joined their father. Ella’s take on a fedora in dark green featured a tall crown, wide brim and simple bow at the side in coordinating grosgrain ribbon. Freddie’s straw fedora featured a cowboy-hat shaped brim that I’m not fond of. Thankfully, the smart grey and red trim added some polish to the piece.

The weekend’s climax was a variety show set up in an arena in Windsor Great Park that featured more than 1200 performers, 900 horses and numerous other animals (cows, dogs and a goat). While the Queen did not wear a hat for this evening event, the Princess Royal, Earl of Wessex, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor and Zara Tindall, who all took part in the pageant riding horses belonging to the Queen, did.

So many of the hats we see here lean toward the formal side and it’s a fun change to see more informal pieces. There will be more celebrating (with lots of hats) on the Queen’s official birthday celebration on June 11.

Herta Graves, former hatmaker to British royals, passed away this week (Telegraph). Speaking of royal milliners- those of you lucky enough to be in London might want to catch milliner Stephen Jones speaking at the London School of Fashion on May 16. Tickets are free and you can register here.

Princess Alexandra, who is Royal Honorary Colonel of The Royal Yeomanry, presented the group with a Guidon at Buckingham Palace yesterday. Her repeated blue staw hat (you’ll see a better view of it at a previous outing here) is by Rachel Trevor Morgan

Day 4 of Cheltenham Festival

The final day of the Cheltenham Festival was again attended by members of the British Royal Family. Princess Anne repeated her cream straw hat with feather encrusted upturned brim, feather trim at the side and wide silk sash around the base of the crown. There’s so much going on on this piece that the amazing feather work on the brim is lost and the hat descends into cartoon land. Remove that awful sash and the button holding the side feathers and I think we might have a winner here.

Zara Phillips Tindall wrapped up this week of racing with a fourth new hat. Described by the designer as a “classic velour felt beret hat with stylised felt bow trim”, the steely teal blue of this cocktail hat is a fantastic colour on blonde Zara. The scale is also perfect and the hat gave a great pop of colour to her black and white ensemble. Many of you have already recognized this as the same design as worn by the Duchess of Cambridge but don’t worry- we’ll take a closer look at these two versions of the same design side by side next week!

That wraps up the Cheltenham Festival for another year. With the Duchess of Cornwall touring the Balkans, there was less royal attendance at the event this year than in years past but we can still thank Zara Phillips Tindall for bringing us some exciting new millinery. She was certainly the star for me at this year’s races- which hat stood out for you most at Cheltenham this week?
